View Full Version : SLS leaks other than the actual air bag - is there any other seals or common leak fau

I replaced the airbags in my D2a a few years ago with new Contitech units. The left side is now deflating right down. Inspection of the bag shows no issue and no visible bubbles from soapy water sprayed on the airbag or air line connection. I cannot hear any air leaks anywhere in the airline from airbag to pump. Feeling along the airline I cannot find any damaged hose.

It's a slow leak as with manual reinflation it takes a day to go back down. With that side at full droop I manually inflated it up to 90psi, left it for a few days and it was still on 50psi when I came back.

I've ordered a new airbag for the purposes of testing and to have a spare if it's not needed. I've also purchased one of the eBay pump rebuild kits as it's nearing 300,000km now on the original.

Is there any other seals or common leak points? Every thread I find through Google it's just air bag and/or failed compressor (often due to failed airbag not having been dealt with).

I've got this problem also, pretty sure it will be a leaking solenoid in the compressor box, unfortunately they are probably all at the age/km that this will start to be a problem.

.

so at full droop for a full day,, did you spray the bag then?

maunal inflation means very few points of failure,, [smilebigeye]

is 90 a lot?? anyone?
mine took around 70 empty to standard height...

The solenoid may leak or the connectors. Typically the fabric where the airbag folds starts to fail. It's a micro leak, think of an air mat failing, rather than a hole. It's not easily identifiable as a bubble, more like foam.

The valve block is probably due to be changed. It’s in the compressor box. Here’s a link to buy a new one. Don’t bother trying to fix the old one.

Air Suspension Valve Block / Solenoids ANR4869 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order. (https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/suspension-valve-block-solenoids-wabco-anr4869-p-5847.html)

Parts 10-16 form the 1 piece valve block.

Once I changed mine I had no more issues with my sls at all.

Check the QR connections and make sure the lines are terminated cleanly and squarely.

This seems more likely to me than the airbag.

Yes. I've sprayed it a few times.

My manual inflation set up is t-pieced into the airbag lines after the solenoid. I do have emergency inflators which could go straight into the airbag but haven't used them.

Yes, it's the higher end of the offroad/extended height mode.

Thanks for that link. Island-4x4 are a lot cheaper for the new valve block than Brit-Car who I have a trade account with and have used for years. I'll order it now and swap it out.

Take the airbag out, put it to full length, get some light pressure into it and then try the soap test. I'll nearly guarantee that you will have found your leak.
Btw: if you do this, may be a bit time consuming to fold down and get back it in.

I've heard, but never bothered to check, that the workshop manual says to take bag out every 12 months and check for leaks. I've never heard of anyone doing this either.

Turns out it wasn't a leak at all. I replaced the solenoid box and no change. Investigated further and it was the left height sensor that had failed. According to Nanocom it was only giving one reading of 164 for the ride height. When I removed it the leg was stiff and hard to move.

So no drop in the read end overnight? Glad to hear it was an easy fix

Yep, no more drop.
