I am wondering if anyone has stripped the clear finish on the walnut veneer of the center console. What products did you use?

They have a walnut finish ? I thought they were just all smashed up bits of plastic crap [bighmmm][biggrin] My next project is to make a new center console for mine.

mine is a 95 soft dash, the centre console is the "skate board" style walnut or beech veneer. The clear finish is cracking and I would like to restore it.

Hi bikeman,

How deep are the cracks in the clear?

Some 2500 or 3000 wet and dry will help.
You would have to do the entire "skate board", not just concentrate on the cracks.

When you are satisfied with your efforts, head for the bottle of polish, something like Meguiar's swirl remover.

Once you've done that, a regular spray can of clear coat evenly applied, will produce the finish you're looking for. (after wiping down with thinners or prepwash)

If it looks like "orange peel" afterwards, you need to get the 3000 (or above) back, and gently sand. (Use a neutral car wash, or dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water to help lubricate)

Another option is to sand it back, polish again, wipe with thinners or prepwash, lightly stain it, (after a trip to Bunnings[emoji6]), then apply a clear glossy vinyl wrap to it. Small pieces of wrap can purchased from Supercheap or Autobarn or eBay etc...

I tossed my centre console as it was broken in so many places before I bought the car - it was tacked together with superglue under the vinyl.

Department of the Interior centre console which I found used in canberra for not a lot of money was the solution for me. and it was a much nicer solution.

They still make them to order.

If faced with a choice like this again I'd not procrastinate as much as I did and I would just buy a new one. That's how I felt after installing the used one after waiting so long.
