I had new tyres fitted at a local tyre place, after hearing a load of hammering while sitting in the waiting room I now have at least 10 destroyed wheel nuts that seem to be free with every set of new tyres fitted to a Discovery. And what makes it worse I new better than to leave it to a barbarian of a tyre fitter while the boss was out.

When I had new tyres fitted I insisted that they be hand tightened.

It's an issue that has been discussed many times here. Rattle guns kill the LR nuts as they have a cover on them that does not go well with rattle guns and the cover gets destroyed giving you the problem described.

Exactly. The cause as i understand it the workshop rattle guns are set to max torque. I use my rattle gun set on 2 (out of 4) on the little wheel at the handle to run them up, then tighten by hand using a breaker bar. Undoing by same then run them off with the rattle gun.

With new tyres being fitted i always ask that they undo them manually.

Luckily a complete new set of genuine lug nuts is not going to break the bank.

I had that happen in Joondalup where the idiot tyre "fitter" rattled them up so hard I couldn't remove the nuts. Plus of course he didn't even bother stopping the gun before trying to fit it on the next nut.
They did pay for new nuts though and he disappeared. Now I always insist that "no gun" is put on worksheets when rotation and balancing is done.
I think that most of them have the same attitude as a sales assistant at Repco just down from the tyre place when I inquired about oil for the Puma engine.... "It's only a Landrover, stick any ****ing thing in it"!
Guess who doesn't get a cent out of me now for anything.

AlanH.The owner got back to me with an offer to replace the damaged nuts which is great but you would think by now they would know how to treat wheel nuts like these. Nick

Just had my new Compo's and Pirellis fitted at the local shop.
They were excellent. All wheel nuts were tightened using a torque wrench. Top service!

You can get solid wheel lugs for a D3 / D4 just like with a Defender

I’ve had the same set for my D3, D4 and now my RRS. I take the originals off when I get the car.
I learnt my lesson with the damaged nuts on my D2.

I run BMW X5 rims and had to import the right nuts from the US. $100 for 24. Thankfully they are solid but I'm not taking any chances.

I bought a set in matching black from Rimmer Bros, plus same in locking nuts.

I did the brake pads (front and rear) and a wheel rotation on my wife's 2009 Turbo Forester last Friday. A young apprentice from the Parramatta Subaru dealer happened along and decided to give me hand. When we were putting the wheels back on, I grabbed my torque wrench to do up the wheel nuts**. I asked him if they just use a rattle gun and he said that they always use a torque wrench.

I must admit I was surprised.

When I removed the wheels, I couldn't undo the wheel nuts even with with a long breaker bar. I had to use a rattle gun (the Suby hadn't had it's last in-warranty service from them but by another Suby dealer who'd lost the service records book). If I'd had to change a tyre on the road, it would have been impossible.

** The setting (100Nm) is not in the owner's manual. I found it by downloading the workshop manual from the 'net.

I have been using Tyreright in Boulder since I had my D2 and have never had any issues with wheel nuts on either the D2 or the D4. They only ever use a rattle gun to spin on or off the nuts, and use a breaker bar and socket to loosen / tighten the nuts on ANY customer vehicle - I have witnessed this myself on many occasions.

Can't speak highly enough of the service I have received from this business, and as a result of this service, it has never interested me to look elsewhere.

My compomotives have just arrived, tyre selection conundrum up next. Interested to know your choice of Pirelli type and size and how you are finding them? How is the road noise at cruising speed on the bitumen?

Cheers

I went with Pirelli Scorpion AT+ in 265/60 R18.
So far, there's no difference in road noise from the 19" ATR's (255/55) they replaced.
I was concerned that may be an issue, but they're just as quiet.

I've managed a bit of driving on dirt/gravel, but nothing major yet. Very impressive there, too.

Next week will be the big test when we head out to Bungalbin (Helena & Aurora Ranges), and come back off-road via Mt Jackson.

I live in Wembley and work in West Perth if you want to drop by and have a look at the AT+'s. Drop me a PM.
