Thats about $870 each?
Doesn't seem like a whole lot to me. I havent seen VW Australias books but is that enough of a sting for them?

I guess it's based on the cost of having VW reprogram their ECUs, plus damages.

What about the lost resale value? These vehicles are worth bugger all because of this. They got of very lightly IMO.

Not sure how ‘cheap’ they are but their value decreased quite dramatically after this all went down. Not sure if prices have recovered or not but there would have been plenty of people who lost more than normal depreciation because of this - even on vehicles not directly effected.

I don't see the point of a payout, its not like the owners would know any different if they weren't told about it ?

VW should be paying the whole of Australia.
It was, after all,, EVERYONES air that was polluted..

Given the vehicle exhaust emissions contribute to the deaths of more people than are killed on road accidents, I think it's clear VW should be heavily penalised for trying to poison us all. Glad to see that LR diesels seem to be much cleaner.

Yep and everyone's health that they cared less about.
No penalty could be harsh enough.

Just because they fudged the test doesn't necessarily mean they are putting out more emissions than anything else.

Just because they fudged the test doesn't necessarily mean they are putting out more emissions than anything else.
I saw an emissions test of a whole range of vehicles while they were in use and they were all blowing a lot more than the claims. The emissions claims are based on a standard set of conditions, exactly the same as fuel consumption tests are conducted under a controlled environment, but on the road we all blow out well past those figures.
The cheat device was targetted at the US market who have a different set of diesel conditions to everywhere else in the world, it made no difference in the Australian market as the vehicle complies as well as every other diesel engine... the only difference was that it had the redundant software in the computer. The technology driving the motor is the same across a lot of manufacturers, so VAG are not so unique.
Speaking to a VW salesman though, he said Dieselgate didn't affect his sales at all.
