Just had a basic quote to get my clutch done. I was pulling about 1.5 tonne of fencing wire in our trailer up a gradual grassy slope in 4-lo yesterday and I smelled a bit of burning going on. I guess the clutch is on its way out after 170,000km.

I rang a dealership this morning and they quoted me 8-10 hours of labour at $120-ish an hour plus $225 for the master cylinder (I'll get it replaced while we're at it), $170 for the throw-out bearing, $389 for the clutch disc and $396 for the other half.

That's a total (at 10 hours) of $2,380 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They GOTTA be freakin' kidding@@!!!@%^#%

What have people paid before for a clutch on a late-ish model Defender?

Book time is only 4.10hrs so I'm surprised they quoted 8-10hrs for the job.

The master cylinder is a bit of a pain though - that's just over 2 hours (officially anyway).

I think you'll be doing some ringing around Chris.

You ain't whistlin' Dixy Scott! Firstly, I didn't say anything about myself (club associations, AULRO, etc, etc), so the dealer is already trying to take me for a spin because I'm some dumb schmuck off the street.

I'll be buying the hardware from somewhere else, and getting a local mechanic (who is a 4WD nut) to do the job. Reckon I'll get away with half if not more of that cost. Just incredible.

Omaroo I just ordered a new clutch master cylinder from Karcraft in Sydney for $59.03 plus postage. They can post these in an Aust Post express pack for a couple of dollars. Contact details:

I would definately shop around for better parts prices on the other clutch components.

The labour seems excessive for dropping the box and replacing the clutch - does anyone know what is the accepted method to replace clutch in TD5 - do people generally drop gearbox and transfer case or is the engine pulled from the vehicle???

Cheers Daz - I'll look into Karcraft. They appear to be pretty good on other stuff too, and are the local Bearmach distributors, no?

I believe that the dealers drop the box, not the engine.

I'm sure Pete Sneig will back me up on this...

Dont try to go too cheap and fit an aftermarket clutch to a TD5...

It will only end in tears https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ and you'll end up fitting at least OEM parts.

Not saying dont get them cheaper, but make sure its OEM or there can be problems.

Sneigy will have more on this.

That price is a joke. I did a TDI last year for &#036;296 (&#036;310 i think include post to Orange) for the complete kit from Graeme Cooper & we fitted ourselves took the day to do but we cleaned up a bit under there and fixed the transfer leak at the same time, thanks to brindo75 & his dad Clive.

I can&#39;t imagine a TD5 any harder to do or dearer for parts.

<span style="color:#000099">the Td5 has some strange sort of clutch....its a double clutch or something with some hydraulics in it.....
its all on the disc......

and some part numbers.....
STC100410 m/cyl-clutch
FTC4630 cover-clutch
UQB000120 plate-clutch
FTC5200 bearing-clutch



these numbers are off my receipt......ive had my clutch changed....i thought they may help you a bit.....</span>

I just looked at the four Wheel Drives cattledog & the master cyl is &#036;66.00 the plate &#036;209.00 and the pressure plate &#036;275.00 Throwout bearing is &#036;38.50
The LROCV members get 10% off and the price is then plus GST
They would not be genuine of course but whats genuine??
Thats around half the price you were quoted.
For labour , its always a better option to drop the gearbox.

i think this is the bit with all the hydraulics and dampening bits built in......

The other thing to do is replace the fork and/or reinforce it so that the slave can&#39;t punch a hole through it.
