My 2015 D4 is coming up to 160,000 km in 4.5 yrs - maybe half of that towing a 6.5 M/2,500 kg boat.

its been a fantastic vehicle. Just completing a 10,000 km trip around eastern Australia - never missed a beat.

I had the gear box serviced at 80,000 km and the cam shaft belts will be done at the 160k service.

Is there anything else I should have done?

At belt change also replace cause it’s easier;

Water pump
Plastic coolant junction top of motor
Alternator
New coolant

Hard to say off hand as you may well have done heaps of preventative maintenance. Assuming you've replaced transfer case and diff oils and air, fuel and pollen filters I'd say you have most things covered.

Well, its had regular services and everything ever required. As I said, I had the transmission serviced at 80k, so I assume that I should have the transmission oil replaced at 160k. Will check on the diff oils and air/fuel/pollen filters.

Is there anything else I should have done?

some would say...'sold it' [bigwhistle]

nothing went wrong on mine till 200,000 + kms - but:

lower control arms
maybe airbag/struts?
depends on how it all feels
brake rotors due?

Now at 300,000kms - still love it.

As already mentioned;
(apart from all the driveline fluids, brakes etc, serpentine belt, common service items)

*timing belts.
*top plastic coolant housing.
*coolant expansion tank, or at least the cap (they can get leaky round that km's).
*front lower control arms (only if getting clunky over bumps or braking).
*maybe service kit through air compressor.
*tune out egr (they get problematic round that km's).
*top intercooler hose (if it hasnt been done already, only use a genuine one).
*look at top rad hose, make sure its not rubbing on engine cover.

*maybe rear shocks if its feeling a bit too floaty in the rear end.
*spraying a good silicone spray on rubber suspension parts will extend their life greatly (ensure silicone spray is a "safe for plastic/rubber" ).

Check lower intercooler hose too, and drain out any oil from the intercooler.

What about wheel hubs and bearings? What is the service life of them generally?
Or is it just more an item you replace once showing sings; unless you’re planning a big lap trip or similar?

Thanks to all who have contributed so far. This is really helpful!

I am compiling a list of items and will have a conversation with my service provider. It looks like being one hell of a service, for a vehicle that drives like its brand new.

I am budgeting $10k. If it doesn't get to that, I'll trick it up a bit more with the change!

What’s everyone’s thoughts on remapping a 3.0 8 speed 2013 TDV6? My local Land Rover specialist doesn’t feel comfortable remapping it because he’s seen quite a few split inlet manifolds. But to turn off EGR you have to remap it don’t you? I’m not after a huge power increase, and not really much above SDV6 levels.

The manifolds will go anyway if you’re unlucky - they have 8 revisions of that Part now!

Remap to SDV6 ish levels, shut the EGRs [emoji41]

Thanks Tombie. Is replacing the manifolds a job I can do in the driveway or is it a mechanic job?

I think DJ is still carrying the scars from doing his. Possible but not an easy job, theres a lot of stuff to get out of the way before removing the manifolds. I understand at least 2 injectors need to come out too for clearance...

As usual a helpful and informative thread. We are keeping the D4 until our Defender arrives so as the extended warranty runs out in December we will be undertaking probably all of what has been suggested thus far.

So if anyone is looking for an excellent and well maintained TDV6 in around June 2020 keep us in mind it will be a steal

What year and spec Rob and what location?

What year and spec Rob and what location?

MY15, TDV6 seven seater with; meridian sound (absolutely the best system) black leather interior and indus silver paint, Traxide DBMS, Llams, 6x GOE rims and BfG Ko2 tyres with, ATM, a brand new carcass, 3x Rhino aero bars and a rhino roof basket, plus our famous custom made sliding tray and an icon 440 UHF. Add an OE alloy bar. For towing it has; 12 pin plus Anderson plug and REDARC TowPro V3 controller. Tinted windows all round and custom, removable, insulated window panels for rear cargo area and rubber mats. Currently at <1300km with a full and detailed service history by LRA. All fluids done plus LCA plus brakes all round. The car is the reason we will spend the extra coin and buy Defender rather than the rather lardy, slow, less than fun to drive LC200 which we can buy a lot cheaper than either a D5 or new Defender. It's been absolutely brilliant towing our Ultimate and AOR Q+ around the country and we will certainly miss it. Forgot to add, 5x19" rims and tyres, rear ladder and we are fitting a new OE windscreen shortly as the current one has been repaired 12 times so as far as I am concerned we are not leaving Adelaide without a new one. Can probably add a complete TPMS as well as I have a spare, industrial grade, one spare ATM

New Defender has very big shoes to fill

Curious as to why you’re planning on selling Rob given the praise and how well suited the D4 seems to your travelling.

PS; please don’t partake in sale “advertising” in this part of the forum, even if it is referring to well into the future.

Always seems to be the case that just when you get a vehicle to a stage of repair or development that suits......you feel the need to sell it!!

Someone will get a bargain.....no doubt😎

Scott apologies I was only replying to a question

Why sell? Simple we swap out all our 4WD at around the five year mark or around 120,00km so this one is in the zone and I have not been considering the D5 to do the work we do. So have been waiting until we knew all about Defender and whilst the full and final price remains an unknown until the end of this week I cant really see myself in an LC200. But if the price is right who knows. I have just got back from the SA 4WD show after pricing a fitout for a Cruiser and the Lovells GVM upgrade is around $5k to start with and that may mean it won't fit in the garage to start with.

Going to be an interesting week

Nope don't really feel the need to sell it just the law of diminishing returns tells me the longer I hang on to it the more money I have to pull from the pension fund to buy something to replace it

Re the lc200 ... Have they fixed the air box issue? 5k seems cheap. I'm comparing to my mate who's spent a lot more than that setting up his cruiser to tow 3t. Mind you he's had 2 goes at getting the suspension right. The auto also had to be re mapped and the engine was re mapped with a larger exhaust for more power!

But like you he's at a stage where a full warranty is unobtainable so he's looking at a new one.....before the new model comes out supposedly next year.

He reckons the new one won't be as good as the 200 series.

There's no doubt that Aussies just love the Cruiser but have you driven the Nissan?

Actually $5k for a GVM upgrade is at the higher end of the scale. That's for a Lovells kit which, in SA, includes a fully certified GCM upgrade as well. I was surprised at that but they have the certificate for perusal. I have quite a few friends with heavily modified cruisers and having driven most of them against a 2019 model all I can say is Toyota has obviously spent some time fixing issues that should have never existed in the first place. I have never felt the need for more power with the TDV6 so find it hard to understand why anyone would want more than 650Nm in what is effectively a truck. Read slowish and solid but not a heck of a lot of fun to drive IHMO.

The 300 series is at least two years away according to my industry contacts and will come with a petrol hybrid and diesel both with 6 cylinders and turbos

We are not at this point yet. That arrives shortly after our local dealer gives me the pricing on the SE and HSE we have specc'd

Interesting. I’ve just clocked up 5 years and 115,000km on mine. At this stage I think I’ll keep it, maybe it’ll be good for another 5 (I hope so). Certainly been fantastic so far and I don’t want to face starting again just yet.

ScottSame here Scott. 5 years and 165,000km. I'd be happy driving it for 3-5 years +, until the engine or gearbox crapped itself, then assess from there.

The D4 here is my longest owned 4 wheeled vehicle.
Coming up on 8 years and 148,000km. Much of it offroad.

It’s still tight as a drum, performs better than every (tweaked) and will get a full suspension refit in the new year.

What’s it worth? Doesn’t matter now. The outlay and interest saved is being redirected to Super and will pay off in years to come.

It’s the first time in our lives we said “Yes we want one (2020 Defender). We won’t do it because we can do...... with the same outlay.” Shocked me!

This will do for a while yet [emoji41]

I still want a 2020 Defender though!!! [emoji41]

Re the 200 Series re map...reason was to better hold top gear and reduce fuel consumption/revs and gear hunting. Toyota recommended it and did the work. Same for the larger chimney.

They also recommended twin snorkels or advised my mate to stay out of the dust saying the engine is worth @ 45k to replace. That would cause me to walk away instantly!

So it's strictly a bitumin cruiser. He was too scared to take it to Fraser isl.. taking a tour bus instead😃

One hopes Toyota has addressed design issues by now.

Good thing for Bruce is the huge trade in value not that a fisherman needs to worry tooo much @ that☺

The UHF has a remote head so the box is under the seat and the mic is fixed using HD velcro just under the stop start button

The tray I designed and it was manufactured by a bloke here in Adelaide. Photos attached

Tombie no sweat it's a brilliant bit if design and manufacturer if I say so myself. Still going strong as we built for quality. It's a simple removal as the brackets use the tie-down bolts, we put in longer HT ones of course, as the location and fixing points in the back of the car. With the third row seats out most of my tools and all of my recover gear lives there

Will keep you posted. This week is I feel going to offer me a few things to chew over with this change

My 2011 D4 is in at the moment at the local ARB / Repco / 4WD Centre for timing belts, water pump replacement, transmission service including replacement sump and a routine book service. They are not LR dealers or agents, but the owners of the business are LR owners themselves and have good knowledge and resources. Their main mechanic who is working on the car is pretty switched on - they also did the last routine service with no issues. I can't be bothered driving down to Perth for servicing etc any more unless I have other reasons to go there.

OK - I thought I should follow up on this thread with the outcome.

Jobs done!

The vehicle is a 2015 Discovery 4 SE 3.0L SC V6 with 160,000 km on the clock.

It has had:

182,000 km service as per the handbook
All filters, including the pollen filter replaced
Front and rear timing belts, tensioners and tensioner bolt replaced
Top intercooler hose replaced
Front and rear diff oils replaced
Transmission oil and pan replaced
Coolant junction outlet housing and coolant replaced

I didn't replace the alternator or the water pump, but I will buy new ones to carry as spares when heading for remote places.

Cost = within a bee's dick of $6,500 - $4k (excl.) parts and $1,800 (excl.) labour, and within a few hundred $$ of the rough verbal estimate given to me by the service manager.

I had told them to fix anything else found that needed attention, as its still under extended warrantee - nothing found!

I don't know how long it took to do the service as I just left the vehicle with them while I went away on business for 3 days.

I have never had any other 4 x 4, but I accept that if I drive something as sophisticated as a Disco then its going to cost me more than a go kart!

A big bouquet to Tony Ireland Townsville - I have always been happy with the work they have done for me in the past.
