Is it super uncommon to have the swivel hub crack in half? What causes it? Stress on it over time? The defender in this video didn't look that old or as if it had a rough life? Wondering if i should carry a spare with me on my long trips...

Yes its a Defender TDCi (puma) and that one is his second Defender after loosing his first to a head on collision with a truck, so its prolly only a few years old.

Very very uncommon, it actually cracked right on the edge of the swivel ball.

There was another Australian one on FB recently on a Perentie
The swivel had been modified though so was suspect.

Oh ya, i watched the end of the video and the guy said there was a recall on those swivel hubs on the defender.
Phew! One less item i don't have to worry about carrying a spare of in my disco!

From what I remember, the recall was the weld on the axle housing was suspect and had a bracket that bolted on and wasnt cracking of swivel hubs as in this video

You would have to do something unusual to break a swivel hub.

I reckon that the car he bought had a large accident prior to his buying it.
IFAIR from reading the blog he also had very big tyres on it, but that should not cause a problem.

In all my years of RRC and Disco ownership including being tech manager of the Riyadh Rover Register and member of the RR club of NSW, I have never seen or heard of this failure. Bolts stretching Yes.

And that includes traversing trackless desert at speed where the car became airborne over unseen whoop de doos.

It's like broken wheel studs or drive member studs/bolts.Toyotas and Nissan do it all the time but not Land Rovers. lets not talk about axles though.

Yes corrrect, there is another thread floating around.

From memory a bracket has been fitted to a range of pumas.
