I need to overhaul the cooling system on my '95 Defender, a low coolant alarm and replacement header tank are on the shopping list along with new hoses.

Has anyone had experience of the aluminium header tanks on Ebay ?

Seem to be two types. One has a screw on cap with pressure release in 'billet' aluminium (how that word is misused) the other has a conventional looking radiator cap.
The one with the screw on cap is more expensive by about $40 but is a neater looking design (a couple of rounded edges).

My Defender still has the black plastic header tank which has been there while I've owned it (over 20 years). I like the idea of an aluminium tank as it's unlikely to split, the only issue is you have to remove the cap to check the coolant level.

Low coolant alarm a must have. If your header tank and cooling system is fine, save your money . Saying that if it has a black header tank they have form for cracking. get the opaque one. My opinion.

I'm aware that the original (black) tanks are known to split hence the question about fitting an aluminium header tank.
No replies so has nobody used an Ebay header tank ?

I’ve been thinking of geting a Allisport header tank with a sight glass and low level alarm for our Puma.

ColinI bought an eBay job a couple weeks ago, one with the funny looking cap, it bolted up ok, the cap doesn't seem the best fit bit doesn't leak, but it does sit higher than the original and the cap pushes slightly into the soundproofing under my bonnet.

Seems well made but I think the centre of my clutch just tore out (unrelated to the header tank!) So it won't be getting much testing for a bit.

My main concern would be the cap leaking in time, and also the availability of a replacement one.

Cheers
James

Thanks,
I did wonder about that cap....is the thread the same as the old one ?

ColinNo, it's stepped more than threaded , it would be difficult to find a replacement I think, but it may last for year's, the actual tank looks pretty good.

Actually,I should see if the original will screw on, I'll get back too you on that.
