A few months ago one of the major retailers put their $2 Milk up 10c which was to go to the Dairy Farmers , i noticed yesterday that the 10c has now grown to 39c Making the $2 milk $2.39 Milk . A recent news artical about southern Q/land Dairy Farmers shutting up shop in which one of the Farmers said this extra levy on the milk was not bieng passed on as intended , anyone know if this is fact or not ? .
As I have gladly paid the increase in the $2 Milk which was to assist the farmers I would be somewhat annoyed if the statement that it was not passed on was in fact correct .

Landline on Sunday done a report on this
Not all the milk that dairies produce goes to supermarket milk
A lot goes to cheese and yogurt
The average a farmer was getting for the extra 10 cents per litre for supermarket milk worked out to be 2 cents per litre overall
China is 10 million tonnes short on pork because of swine flu
Price of all meat is going to go up to meet chinas shortage
Maybe the dairies can start selling there animals for meat and stay in business
Less milk
Demand stays high
Prices rise
One way for farmers to get there fair price for milk

I dropped into dairy friends of mine on the weekend.
Although they are with Norco and have recently been advised Norco are giving them an increase at the gate. Sadly it’s not covering the extra cost of the drought but it was welcomed given they didn’t ask as they are contracted.
If their Norco branded milk goes to Coles it works out better for them than is it goes to Woolworths......
They also said they’d be surprised if the 10c increase on the coles and Woolworths mild was being passed on in full to the farmer.

As we only shop once or twce monthly we get the $1 a litre longlife milk by the carton.
However ALL of my meat is bought locally and often directly from the farmer.

I only buy premium brand milk, usually Pauls full cream. Just prior to TC Yasi, I purchased the last four litres of milk available in Coles Innisfail; 1 x Dairy Farmers FC, 1 x Coles brand FC. They were placed beside each other in the well cranked up fridge at home. The coles one froze!
I've also noticed, of late, that Woolworths no longer stock the variety of options that they once did, eg yogurt is now only offered in their own brand and Yoplait.

Grew up in dairying country and used to relief milk, I know how much hard graft is involved so always have bought premium brands. While I understand every dollar counts to a lot of families it does frustrate me that the majority just don’t have a clue about how hard the $2 milk the stupermarkets sell make it for our farmers. 🙁

Why - the farmer does get any more than the cheap milk and all the extra money just lines the pockets of the middlemen and the retailer.

No, the farmers DO get more - not all is passed on, no - but the quality is better, the retailer and the middle man do get more, but so does the Farmer - I know this as I know the industry right from the moo, through production - I’ve worked in more than one place that processes drinking milk. Pay more, the Farmers do get more.
$2 milk is driving many to the wall and those that insist on buying it are the main problem. If everyone bought the premium brands the Farmers would be in a much better position. Don’t believe what the supermarkets or the internet tell you, go speak to a Dairy Farmer, get dirty and milk some cows, then get back to me.

I buy the $3.40 milk.
I’ll only buy brand name milk
Harvey Fresh, Brownes, etc
I’ll only buy meat from butchers
Local to where I’m eating it if possible
That’s if it doesn’t come off my own farm ( butchered locally )
I’ll only buy fruit and veggies from local suppliers or my own garden
I shop at the local IGA, if I do go to coles or woolies I refuse to use self serve checkouts
I try and buy fuel from a servo who still pumps it for you
I’ll only shop at local hardwares
I will buy Australian made over made in China ( And others )
I know it costs me more, but I have kids who will want a job one day ( even if it is serving you at the local shop )
When they’re old enough hopefully my stubbornness has created a job in the local economy for them
I’m sure if enough people think about there kids future and the future of Australia and support the local economy then we might have a chance
Buy Australian made, buy from a local producer, holiday in Australia and as one of those tossers in Canberra once said “ Make Australia Great Again “.

The farmers contracted to other brands (not Woolies or coles) do get a higher gate price, it’s not three times higher but it enough their head above water (milk).

To my surprise we come across one of these on our last trip, other than that I haven’t seen an old school service station in 20 years.

The farmers don't know how much they're getting for the product when it leaves the farm. Later they get a statement telling them that X% went to premium milk at $A per litre, Y% went to supermarket milk at less than $A per litre and Z% went to other products.
