"Committee's run by old bored retired men looking for something to be in charge of". Really ? Shooting pets, spying , what is going on in apartment land. Is it as bad as all that?

Well if you don't like the decisions of the Body Corporate then join and encourage like minded residents to also join and make the changes you want - remember the Body Corporate is a group of residents managing the Common Property. I have been involved in Body Corporates that had unreasonable members voted off.

Also on the issue of pets, most courts consider it unreasonable (within some boundaries) for Body Corporates to ban pets and if the Body Corporate goes to court over the matter of a dog, cat, fish or bird they will normally loose.

Many Body Corporates only rule by bluff.

Most likely because no one else was prepared to nominate and do the job. My late mother lived in a block of twelve townhouses at Yeronga. One year three owners who were on the committee sold and left. The persons appointed in their places were up front in that they were only going to serve as an emergency measure until the next AGM. Six of the units were owned by absentee landlords only one of whom ever attended a meeting. Came the AGM the three duly resigned as stated but not one person nominated. Mum at age 80 took on the job of secretary more or less under duress. She put up with the ****ing and moaning for two years and resigned.

We briefly owned a 5 acre block in an estate that was run as a community title, similar to a strata setup. I joined the committee in the belief that if you don't participate then you can't grumble about outcomes. In the time I was there we had the presidents fence cut in six places at 02:00 in the morning , letting his stock out (allegedly by a retired copper who didn't like the strata rules). We had people ringing and abusing committee members because they were "entitled" to garden water on their block and there wasn't any, ( there was a drought and the dam was dry) and numerous people who refused to acknowledge the existence of any strata title and ignored all the bylaws.
In addition there is very little real power that the strata committee have without resorting to litigation which they do not have resources for.

Never. Again. for me

My son has just recently purchased an apartment.
He has had issues with water leaks and after contacting the body corporate a plumber was promptly organised and the problems addressed.

Certainly happy in this case with body corporate.
