Hi guys just a quick question, i've just taken the intercooler out of my tdi (still looking for wierd noise) and noticed there's an oily liquid in the hose's top and bottom ,when i took it off it was like an oily film in the hose now its just dribbling out( theres not that much just a trickle really).
I've got no idea if this is normal or not the intercooler looks quite filthy should oil be in the intake system???

A small amount isn't unusual.

If you have a look just before the turbo there is a small pipe which is a breather. This returns some "fumes" back to the intake to be burnt up. Someone will hopefully give you a more accurate description of what it all does!

If you follow the hose back to the other side of the engine you will find a small canister that helps to "filter" these fumes, could need cleaning.

Landrover UK tell me that using a foam filter cleaner will do the job. Must do mine, haven't got round to it yet. If ever it seems to be getting worse get it checked in case it is an oil leak in the turbo.

Usually if it is turbo oil though you are well and truely aware of it!

Yeah... You will find some oil in the bottom of the intercooler.

Be warned..... When you clean it out using a solvent, make sure that the solvent has had time to evaporate off before re-connecting. Then, when you replace the unit, leave the top hose off. Fire up the engine & just gently move the hose around the pipe to draw air through.

The reason you do this is the solvent will cause the engine to over rev and rev its nuts off... Keeping the hose loose will let you draw air through slowly to evaporate off any excess solvent. Plenty of people have been caught out and just re-assemble everything before firing up.
