55 window glass

g'day all just got rego on my lwb55 and all good, but steering relay may need attention soon, butt front window is scratched and is annoying in the rain as the refection from headlights at night is almost blinding has anyone in Sydney had glass cut as my local bloke in hornsby cant do it,any help appreciated.any one had there steering relay rebuilt local. my local mechanic Carl from thornleigh has closed shop thanks all markus

I have had rear window glass cut for my 1968 Falcon ute a couple of times, most glass shops are happy to cut from an original sample using laminated glass. I have heard of people having issues with the glass not having a stamp indicating that it is laminated but I have not experienced that issue.

I think 'automotive' glass has the edges ground so cracks can't propagate from a rough edge.

Someone on the forum pointed out years back that a company that cuts glass for earthmovers etc. can normally cut the screen and also etch the automotive mark. Problem is they need a template.
Best to find someone who can do the job and then find out what they need in the way of a template. Is it just a piece of ply or MDF cut to the exact size ??

I have a Series III with non-automotive glass fitted by the previous owner, one screen has a crack straight across the middle. Fortunately Series II & III glass is available cheaply from Overseas.

thanks for the info sorry for the late reply but couldn't remember which forum i put this on (old and forgetful and no computer skills) the glass shop near me says they can cut it but they couldn't supply the stamp and after talking to him for a few minuets realised he was not happy to do it, so gave him away, my panel beater mate gave me m1 autoglass he reckons there good and i rang a mobb at castle hill who said it shouldn't be a problem both these guys are mobile units, thanks markus

thanks for the info we had a glass mobb come on site and cut a backhoe side window but silly me didn't get there number, rang a mobb at castle hill said it wouldn't be a problem, i would take the windscreen of the car and they can take the glass out and replace,also m1 autogass will do it on site, haven't rang them yet but after driving in the traffic this mornin the dusty screen was a problem so maybe next pension check (haha) thanks markus

I had a side sliding glass made for my 101 and few years back (about the same size as series 1 glass) - the local glass place did it in automotive tempered glass - was perfect all rounded etc and cost $60 but that was a few years back - no etch marks though.

That's cheap! I got a quote from a place here in Canberra for the 5 pieces in a 2a hard top... came back at over $1200! [bigsad]

I'm guessing it's not going on-road as I'm not sure perspex would pass a roady.
Possibly OK in a Series I as that was what was fitted originally.

Import from the UK is a low cost option for Series II onwards. I've imported screens without an issue but they do warn you they won't cover on insurance for damage during shipping.
