2003 extreme wagon. looking at getting a cruise control fitted, had a look at a few different makes, Auscruise and Command. Would appreciate any comments or advice,

I have a Command 200 on my 92 Range Rover.

It went wrong about a year ago and would shuffle up and down in speed. After a lot of drama finding out what brand and model it was ( because the fitter had not specified it on the invoice and the brand does not appear ANYWHERE), I got in contact with Command who are in Silverwater Sydney.

They diagnosed the problem which was a failed solonoid and sold me the part directly for $48.
While all cruise controls will probably go wrong after a while, its good to be able to contact the technical staff and be able to get the part.
The part which activates the vacuum diaphrgm is the most likely part to fail. I tried to buy a spare but they said do not worry as they did not plan to change that part for many years.
So I am happy with mine. The cruise was fitted about 7 years ago by the previous owner.

By the way the Command and most other cruise controls will drop out if the speed drops by more than 10KMh on a hill. Is it hilly around you? Mine is a mechanical wire puller with vacuum from the petrol motor so I cannot comment on pulse generating ones.

Bruce Davis does a cruise for the Defender that uses the cruise module inside the original ECU.

No add-ons etc... to cause issues....

TD5 is "fly by wire" and I believe Autron is the only one available. I have one fitted to mine. Really makes a long trip a breeze.

Thanks Trev, Autron make the Auscruise which plugs into the ECU and Command now have a model which does the same however neither will sell unfitted and fitted up here inCairns was $850 for the Command and over $900 for the Auscruise.
What sort of price was yours (fitted)?

These prices are a bit staggering - the cruise control (Command) on my 110 cost around $100, admittedly that was over ten years ago, fitted it myself. Only problems with it have been when the wire to the pickup on the front prop shaft fouled the U-joint. Took about half an hour to fix with no cost - did away with the excess wire! It has proved to be totally reliable, but the only other person I know who has fitted one had all sorts of problems until he eventually diagnosed it as a vacuum leak due to a cracked housing on the actuator. Had enough vacuum at idle to work but as soon as he opened the throttle it ran out of vacuum (petrol engine).
