Subject: Tuff Ant and 2012 D4

I am asking on behalf of somone, so I would like answers from people with experience or knowledge only.
I'll start with the wheels. When they recieved their Tuff Ant rims one of them had 3-4mm run out. It was decided that this rim be used as the spare.
On a recent trip to the top end from Vic, one of the rear rims ended up slightly warped or buckled.
The D4 is not used hard off road as it is realy only is used to tow the van.
Upon getting home they went to rotate the wheels and found that the spare with run-out would not fit on the front left as it hit the caliper.
Since both affected rims have been replaced by Tuff Ant they have found that they just don't fully clear the calipers on the left side.
There is only 1mm in it.
No problem on the right side, just the left.

So....
Are the calipers on the left bigger or different to those on the right.

It seems that the tollerances of both manufacturers are incompatible.

I will post this in the forum as well.

Thanks

Hi, Andrew for TuffAnt here, happy to answer both questions here about the customer in question. (We have actually spoken to customer earlier today about the issue)

Firstly, we haven't seen the returned wheels as yes so I can't clearly say what the issue is until we get them back. We have had several wheels that the runout has been larger than the tolerance, all of which we have gladly replaced.

It needs to be noted that all steel wheels are not perfect like an alloy wheel which are cast or forged, that's why every wheel is tested for runout before it leaves the factory. It's more in-depth than I would bore people with here but as there are so few steel wheels on modern cars today many tyre fitters have little experience in fitting and balancing them correctly. We speak to tyre fitters almost on a weekly basis about this question and once fitted there is usually no issues.

The second issue here is that our last batch of wheels that just arrived in the last month (B4) have been made slightly under tolerance, thus giving some users the issues of it touching the calipers and there are slight differences between each car, only small but very slight. It's probably worth dispelling another LR myth here. All L319 3.0 litre discovery 4 diesel vehicles have exactly the same calipers. There is no larger or smaller caliper on the TDV6 or SDV6 models. Expection to this is the 2.7 and some V8s

In relation to the existing batch we have been in contact with every purchaser to explain the situation and that's why we are currently showing them as out of stock (we actually have plenty of stock but until we get the issue sorted we have stopped shipping them without test fitments)

What we have noted on test fitting is that whilst you would think all cars would be identical they are not. There are small differences that are showing in this instance with the passenger side being slightly larger than the driver's side casting

As always, we are 100% committed to our product and just as passionate as the rest of the LR community.

Hope that clears it up
:)

The calipers on the 2.7 and 3.0 may be the same (personally i doubt it), the issue is the 3.0l runs 360mm front brake rotors, whereas the 2.7 runs 340mm rotors. So the caliper sits further out. This is well known here by those that run the 18" componotive rims. Had this issue last time i replaced the rotors and pads, the seller was adamant there was no difference until he saw a photo of the two rotors side by side.
