View Full Version : Issue with GAP Tool and D4?

I'm having some issues with my D4 and GAP Tool - which may be co-incidental rather than related.

10 days ago I connected my Gap Tool whilst waiting at traffic lights to show family how the instrument mode works. Car went into limp mode, then when I pulled over, stopped everything and tried to restart - no go. After trying several fiddles. eventually had to call RAC, who in turn had to put the towtug onto a flatbed to Dazza TD5's place.

I contacted Gap to query if they had heard of something similar before, (especially if the GAP could short out on the OBDII port) and the very informative reply is copied below for those who might be interested (I certainly was).

QUOTE, cut and paste from GAP
How odd, the CAN bus is built in such a way that even if you short the wires together, to ground or power, it will not damage it. This is well-known and there is no known case of one being damaged by a diagnostic tool or any other issue unless the wires are cut somewhere.

We did, however, see a few cases, I can count them on my hands, where bad OBD port terminals or the IIDTool itself would crash the bus upon connection but this always resolved itself by removing the tool and turning the car OFF.
Tightening the OBD pins is the first step. Once done, clear the faults and see if it helped. If not, send us the complete fault list and we shall go from there.

Now to see if Dazza has any luck!!!!

My GAP tool cancels the D4 auto up window function on front windows and cancels the speed alert to each time I plug it in.

Have you emailed them? worth a try. They have been very helpful so far to me.

Personally I don't believe the fault or cause of the fault is the GAP tool.

I'm actually looking at getting a GAP tool for my workshop as yet another valuable tool to have.

I do suggest caution with its use though, only from the point of its a powerful tool that could be mis-used by an owner.

Got another issue now..the fuel consumption figures has rocketed by 5l/100klms since the tool was plugged in and its steadily rising despite no heavy use.

Maybe the tool is a dud?

Unlikely, but I guess possible. Too many on this forum swear by them to be generally U/S, so yes send them an email.

Not sure if DazzaTD5's comments were in part aimed at me, but I've only used mine in instrument mode for the moment and would be very wary of doing anything else except clearing faults until such time as I get down to talk to Eric SDV6SE in Baldivis or another similar guru.

GAP replied advising that the window up and speed alert do cancel when the ccf file is changed.

This is all in the manual as are other consequences such as date and time reset, trip info is erased and so on.

They say the tool has no control over the fuel use readout but I'm presuming this may link to the trip info being erased and guess it will restore to normal over time. We'll see.

Page 153 of the manual sets out all the issues related to the ccf file changes. So READ the manual!!

I did advise that I made no changes. I simply viewed the file.. so not sure why these issues turned up.

Guess there's always some traps for young players😎

My GAP tool cancels the D4 auto up window function on front windows and cancels the speed alert to each time I plug it in.
Reworded, the front window up limits are cleared and the speed alert is cleared whenever the Gap tool is plugged-in. I don't know about the speed alert but cancelling front window up limits occurs whenever the battery is disconnected, as though plugging in the Gap tool momentarily causes a short circuit somewhere that is treated the same as the battery being disconnected.

"10 days ago I connected my Gap Tool whilst waiting at traffic lights to show family how the instrument mode works" Maybe you should stop playing with your tool when you should be concentrating on your driving Gavin.
But I suppose that's too much to ask of south of the river/Freo types. :)

I too have a GAP tool but admit not really knowing how to make full use of it. I'm sure it'll come in handy one day though..... maybe for the vehicles next owner who won't be as thick as me. :(

Dazza,
What is your recommended D4 diagnostic tool? I am getting mixed feedback re GapII tool vs Nanocom vs Roverlite? Have just bought a D4 TDV6 and looking in the new year. Will also be looking at seeing you to get a EGR blank and associated programming for it and maybe a performance map as I understand you are conversant with these upgrades.
Cheers

Dazza did my 2.7 (EGR and remap). Good resultant performance and economy, although I do have a bit of a hesitation/sudden acceleration at times.

Rumour has it from one poster on here that Mark (at Autologic?) has managed to minimise or get rid of this common feature.

Remind self - ask Darren about it next visit.
