Hi All,
Having only "finished' my S2A restoration a few months ago, and then immediately relocating from QLD to TAS, I haven't had a lot of road time with the vehicle. But before I go too much further with the vehicle, I need to sus out a possible front hub issue.
Before trucking the vehicle from QLD to TAS in June, I did drive it from Gold Coast to Beenleigh to See Harry (Series Land Rover Rescue), a round trip of about 80 klms, and at that time, there were no issues with it. I remember checking all hubs then by putting my hand on them, and only slightly warm.
So, then I put it on a transported truck and sent it to TAS.....
I picked it up from Hobart transport depot, and drove it about 40 klms to another forum members house, where it sat for a couple of months outside in the cold of winter Then in September, I moved it to my new house (approx 15 klms), and I noticed some oil/grease splatter on the outside of the front right wheel rim, and a quick check of swivel oil level tells me that the splatter is indeed swivel oil. So I topped it up, hoping for the best. I must say I didn't check the left side, but I wil do that as well.
Anyway, today I took the vehicle for a 10 klm round trip to get my TAS registration, and I left the free wheel hubs disengaged. I noticed a whistle / whining sound (almost like the old finger on the wine glass sound) that seemingly was coming from the front wheels. When I got home I checked the hub temperature, and it's completely cold, so it would appear to not be a bearing issue.
Could this be that the new hub seals (kelpro double lip) I installed aren't doing their job ? Is it something to do with the temperature difference between QLD and TAS ???
I didn't really want to pull the hub(s) apart until I get some guidance from other forum members.
So any suggestions about what to check next or what the issue might be would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
John
