Dave Rennie, as expected, has been announced as the new Wallaby coach. Time to start a new thread about rugby, touch wood, turn three times, life's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. But let's hoist the sail on the good ship wallaby, and motor after the dark side. EDIT

Rugby Australia has today announced the appointment of Dave Rennie as Head Coach of the Qantas Wallabies.
Rennie will fulfil his current commitments with Glasgow Warriors before joining the Qantas Wallabies in July 2020 on a three-and-a-half-year deal that will see him leadAustralia at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
An accomplished and highly respected leader, Rennie joined the Chiefs as Head Coach in 2012 and enjoyed instant success winning back-to-back Vodafone Super Rugby titles in his first two years in charge. The Hamilton-based side played finals in each of the six seasons he spent with the Chiefs, a mark that is unmatched by any Head Coach in competition history.
Prior to the Chiefs, Rennie took the Wellington Lions to a first ITM Cup title in 14 years as Head Coach in 2000, and later steered New Zealand Under 20’s to three consecutive world titles from 2008 to 2010.
Rennie was named Head Coach of Glasgow Warriors for the 2017/18 season and in his second year he took the Scottish outfit to the Pro 14 Final and the Quarter Finals of theEuropean Champions Cup, the first time the Warriors have made the playoffs in both competitions.
Today’s announcement is the result of an extensive search which included in-depth analysis of all of the leading experienced coaching candidates in world Rugby.
Rugby Australia Chief Executive, Raelene Castle said: “This is a massive coup for Australian Rugby, Dave Rennie was the clear standout candidate for the job, and we’re thrilled to havesecured his services.”
“Dave’s coaching philosophy focuses equally on football and team culture, the key pillars to building sustainable success in any team. He has a proven track record in the Northernand Southern Hemisphere.
“Given incumbent Head Coach, Michael Cheika had indicated in early 2019 the possibility that he would not seek re-appointment for the role, we needed to identify a list of candidates that would be available to us, and suitable to work within our new High Performance framework. This search has been ongoing for the past six months.
“When Michael then confirmed he would not seek re-appointment following our Rugby World Cup exit, we moved to appoint our preferred candidate.
“I have had extensive conversations with Dave, and he was interviewed by Rugby Australia Chairman, Cameron Clyne and fellow Board Directors and former Wallabies, Brett Robinson and Phil Waugh before being appointed to the role.
“It was important to Dave to see out his contract with Glasgow and he will commence with the Wallabies at the completion of the Pro 14 season. Between now and June, the Wallabies Assistant Coaches and Director of Rugby, Scott Johnson will take the lead in working with the players under Dave’s guidance and direction.
“Dave and Scott worked closely together during their time in Scotland and will join forces once again to implement Rugby Australia’s National High Performance Plan. With Dave as Head Coach, and Scott managing our off-field program, the Wallabies have the right structure in place to build for the next era of sustained success,” said Castle.
Incoming Qantas Wallabies Head Coach, Dave Rennie said: “My wife, Steph and I have spent the past few months considering our future and we’re really excited about our decision.
“I’ve been coaching professionally for over 20 years and wherever I’ve gone, I’ve immersed myself in the community and culture. I believe I can make a difference here.
“There are some outstanding young men coming through the schools system. I want to create a strong connection with the Super Rugby and national age grade Coaches and help them achieve their goals, which will benefit the Wallabies in time.
“When I met Raelene Castle, I was really impressed with her plans for the future of Australian Rugby and I’m keen to be part of that.
“We’ve loved our time here in Glasgow. The Coaching group and management are absolutely world class. The work ethic and passion of the players has been incredible, and we will miss them,” said Rennie.

UPDATE.

Sounds like what the wallabies need. Now all he has to do is negotiate the egos and State bias.

"What attracted me to Dave when I first put him on in Scotland in the Glasgow job, humble guy, really humble man who is a tracksuit coach who gets out there, encourages skill there's a lot of work on skill development, plays a very, very attractive way, what you see is what you get and that's where we are, that fits our dynamic," he said.

The Springboks go back to the future, finally the Springbok/All Black games will be the magnificent contests they used to be.

Up north, South Africa will be kicking, and they will be hitting anybody foolish enough to be underneath the stampede of hooves when the ball comes down. And they will be doing it all quite unapologetically, without even the hint of a smile.

The contest between two different visions of the game will, at last, be fully and vividly alive – the Springboks looking to kick and hit and hurt, the All Blacks and Wallabies running and passing for their lives. That is, after all, just as it should be. Nothing else will do.[biggrin]

Well, I didn't expect that. I've had a big few days building a fence, and after we drove to Caloundra this morning to check out the van park, [ and have a beer in the Surf club] I fell asleep during the game. Woke up at 13 all, then O'Connor kicked a penalty, then the All Blacks kicked one, then came one of the best extra time moments for a long time. It seemed both sides were intent on playing running rugby , and declined the field goal. 88 minutes it went for, what a start to the new Coach's reign. Rennie is the first Islander coach to coach a tier 1 level team. And he said the team was not satisfied with the draw. In the past they would have been happy just to get close. Lots of improvement needed, but it's doable. Thank goodness I taped it.[biggrin]

Ballymore gets election promise upgrade.
Ballymore’s long wait for an upgrade is a step closer after a $15 million pre-election state government promise that would see Brisbane rugby’s heartland become the home of the Wallaroos.
The Australian women’s rugby team would join the Queensland Reds at the $30 million National Rugby Training Centre to give the once-proud venue new life after years of decay.
The venue could host multiple sports if Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic bid is successful and also bolster Australia’s 2027 Rugby World Cup hosting hopes and act as a training base for the Wallabies or touring Test nations.

A South African supporter picks his Springbok team. Those here who remember the Boks of old will relish the possibility of the new and revitalised Springbok team going back to the future. Can't wait.

"One of my earliest rugby memories was pre-TV with my ears glued to shortwave radio. I was listening to the brainstrust of Dawie de Villiers and Piet Visagie tying the Wallabies, All Blacks, France and England into knots behind a hard driving monster pack. They had a rock solid defence while playing the territory game with pin-point kicking and de Villiers sniping breaks while Visagie was the deadly goal kicker and seamless link to legendary outside backs like John Gainsford, Mannetjies Roux and Tom van Vollenhoven.
This came from a long-gone era when the Boks dominated the world game like a colossus; much like the past decade and a half’s All Blacks vintage of Henry-Hansen domination.
The cool winds of isolation started stunting our rugby and our ivory tower was demolished by Willie-John McBride’s Lions in 1974; much like they did to the All Blacks four years prior.
The take-out from that is that we didn’t have a top flyhalf. The selectors picked four different fly halves in four Tests while the most gifted player of his era, Peter Kirsten, was deemed too small and young."

Well, Calum Clark, the difference in the first half, the aggressive AB defence in the second , which forced the Wallabies into a deeper attack profile, which gave the AB's time , you give the AB's time, you pay the price. Still, the Wallabies didn't fall away, last year the AB's would have put 50 on them. The Wallabies sorted the lineout problems in the second half, but poor passing and ball control [ because of the defence] took away the Wallabies time in attack. Still, I'm impressed with the attitude and commitment of the Aussies. Better things to come.

Back to the drawing board for the baby Wallabies, as the attacking maul is back.
Two common factors throughout this Bledisloe Cup reign are the All Blacks, every time they are challenged, ramping up attrition levels in the pack, and unleashing superior scoring strike power.
This Wallabies’ pack is a work-in-progress and, for as long as Brodie Retallick remains in Japan, the difference is not profound. What is harder to bridge is the deficit in all-round skill, pace and confidence; the ability to flick a switch, go up a couple of gears, and put 14 points into the match in an instant.

The game was Australia's for the winning, but they allowed themselves to be dopes in the rope a dope Argentina played.[Tongan Thor, take note.]Hooper should be set out to pasture. O'Connor and Toomua are needed to give the backline some direction. Bob, I'd like to know your thoughts on the modern game.
I was brought up with Rugby at school and played a few games with the 'Sea Snakes'. I remember when the kerfuffle started with the 'Redcliffe Sevens' comp and the two breweries. My brother played with Teachers for a few years and a pommie born, brother-in-law played 1st Grade in Rocky. I used to love going to Ballymore to watch the big games, especially Queensland v British Lions.
Presently, regarding the modern 'Interpretations' of the game, the three of us have generally lost interest in international rugby.

Presently, regarding the modern 'Interpretations' of the game, the three of us have generally lost interest in international rugby.

Well, you've got me thinking. I recently saw a game, a final, played in NZ between North Auckland and the Marco's. [ think that was it.] A free flowing game , high scoring , physically tough. Some great tries scored, general handling and ruck & maul play good. The scrums a good contest for the ball, skillful lineout play, great to watch. Compare that with the similar level of the game in Aus. and you get box kicks, dropped ball, scrum resets ad infinitum, Stop start play, kicks in general play, ruck infringements ad nauseum, did I mention kicking? We seem to have lost most of the basic skills in the game, hookers who can't throw the ball in straight to save themselves, halfbacks who are too slow passing from set plays, No .10's who can't/ won't tackle, the list goes on. Some blame the referee's interpretation of the rules, and in some cases that may be correct. But we see the top NZ sides , when their game plan is not working, change their game plan on the run. Our sides ,with the exception of perhaps the Brumbies, don't seem to be able to do that successfully.

Years ago, when I played, the Kiwi's called us back yarders. In other words, good players but really had little idea of the finer nuances of the game. Good description really. Where oh where are the John Eales's, Nick Farr Jones's , Michael Lynagh's and yes, the Campese's .I don't remember seeing a decent back line movement this year. Having said that, a new coach, some exciting new players, a new year next year.....but that's what we said last year, and before that.....

New Zealand have the foundations of their game spot on. They develop players to be good people, as well as good players. Australia has to accept what they have, a la Kurtley Beale. It used to be said in a test match even though NZ could find many more good players than Aus. all we had to do was find 18 good players to match them. Not any more. Their best 18 are heads and shoulders over ours. How was this allowed to happen? Grass roots rugby in Australia is dying. Go to any club out west[ if you can find them] and the backbone of the club are usually from across the ditch. Well that's enough grumbling. I'll keep watching, hoping for a miracle. Here is an open letter to World Rugby , which has some very good points.

Well, the Reds pipped the Brumbies in the last minute. [ 40- 38] Very enjoyable rugby game, James O'C. captained well, played well. Still too much ball dropped in defence to suggest either side can challenge teams like the Crusaders across the ditch. The scores indicate good attack, but also not so good defence. Still, a pleasure to watch.

Despite penalties and dropped ball aplenty, the REDS win again. The Force do look the goods, and with two new forward recruits on the way [ both test players], they can't be taken lightly. Toomea is firing for the rebels, and Canberra are still in the hunt , at least for the AU series. How our teams will front up to the top NZ sides is the unknown, but I haven't seen anything to suggest they will survive the relentless pressure the NZ sides will put on them.We can only hope.

Welcome back home, Greg Holmes.

https://inqld.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/holmes-e1616713058642-1024x589.jpg

Good to see the old rugby engine room work horse, Greg Holmes, acknowledged for his enormous contribution to rugby during his brief but emotional return to Brisbane last week, as part of the opposing Western Force squad..
The son of a potato farmer from Warwick, Holmes was the heart and soul of the Reds scrum for 12 seasons, before packing up his boots and heading for Exeter in England, “to bolster his self-managed superannuation fund”.

Not my words you’ll understand – rather the interpretation of his front-row packing cohort, none of whom begrudge their former teammate a single pence. They couldn’t think of a more deserving, stiff-necked, cauliflower-eared beneficiary than Greg “Farmer” Holmes.
There’s a wonderful story involving the 27 Test Wallaby veteran, dating back to 2015 – Holmes’ second last season with the Reds. He and his long-time propping pal James Slipper were in the gym at Ballymore, patiently and painstakingly pursuing their “PB” squats.
In his 12th season of professional rugby, Holmes finally cracks the 150kg threshold – three reps none the less!

There’s high-fiving between the pair – persistence at last pays off. “Great work, mate! Go you good thing”.
A split second later, their attention is drawn to the lifting station two across. Some young islander kid, picking up an impossibly heavy set up dumbbells like it was a toothpick laden with Kellogg’s fruit loops. Vomp. Vomp, Vomp – 10 reps at 200kg.

Taniela Tupou, The Tongan Thor, just 18 years of age.
Holmes looks at Slipper. Slipper looks at Holmes.
“What’s the friggin’ point?” Holmes says to his loose-head buddy, the pair quickly concluding it was time for a shower.
And a coffee.[biggrin]
Don’t despair, Farmer. Regardless of the country, the league, the division, the grade, every rugby team needs at least one Greg Holmes.
