I just received two oil filters for my 368DT that were purchased under the same part number (LR002338) and as OEM (Mahle). One arrived in a blue box (OX 196/1D) and with a round seal and is as I've received and used exclusively in the past. The other arrived in an orange box (OX 196/1 D1) with a square section seal. The seals measure Ø3.5 / 3.5mm square respectively. The square seal is smaller in major diameter so would need to be stretched onto the canister a bit more than the round seal. Refer pictures. The filters appear to be identical in all regards.

Is the square seal OK to use. Given how snug the round one fits I have concerns the square one may cause the canister to be difficult to screw down and/or bunch up the seal and therefore potentially leak. Am I tilting at windmills here?

I've used both types of seals over the decades on many different types of vehicles without any issue. If it came in the box, then it should be fine. Always lubricate the seal with a bit of clean oil or silicone grease.

Thanks for that feedback. I just hadn't seen the square type and wasn't sure given the differences. I always lube the seals before assembly with whatever the working fluid is. I think I learned that lesson when I was 18....

What is a 368DT?

The seal on the oil filter cover should be a square seal and sits so that a corner of the seal protrudes out Not the flat side) . If you have a look at the cannister you will see that the slot that the seal fits in is a v shape so that the square seal has a corner of the seal sticking out and the opposite side sitting in the V section.

My car has never seen a O sectioned ring for this role and I have never received on with oil filters I have purchased.

That’s the 3.6 TDV8.

Oh Ok - so why is this in the D3/D4 section as the TDV8 was not fitted - this means my comments are probably not relevant as I assumed we were talking about a 2.7 in a D3/D4/RRS not a TDV8 in an L322 or RRS

Is the oil fiter system in the TDV8 3.6 the same as a 2.7 TDV6

Apologies for any confusion. I generally tend to get a better response here than in the L320 section and originally thought the filter was common to the Lion V6 (it's not). I believe my oil filter is only used in the 3.6 Lion V8 in L320 and L322, plus some other engines from other manufactures (non-LR). Mods feel free to move if/as appropriate.

Follow-up. My Indie reckons the square seal is not suitable and has given me a round one to replace it. He was quite firm that it didn't suit my application and had only ever used, fitted and seen round seals on the 368DT engine.

If you buy a Ryco filter it comes with both seals. From memory the square section are for some Audi applications only.
