So, reading ALL the comments from a variety of view points on the new Defender..what would’ve made everyone happy?


1) less electronics? Modern engines need electronics to run efficiently and meet emission controls...I haven’t heard anyone complain about the new engines over the older versions. Better fuel efficiency, better power delivery etc..

2) less electronics? Is it the IFS/IRS electronics and traction controls that is causing so many “diehards” to dismiss the new defender?

3) price point..is it the fact that the new defender isn’t in a price range that some people feel comfortable to take to the bush and scratch, dent and damage without feeling guilty that is causing angst?

4) it’s new technology...the monocoque chassis, leather seats, Apple play (?) doesn’t sit well with some...

Discuss....Im happy with how the new defender ended up and have an order on a HSE, quite frankly can't see how they could have viably done it any different all things considered.
Next year there will me even lower base starting with 90, more options to chose from and the hopefully lower again with the commercial.
Its not going to be for everyone and thats fine, because there is the old defender for them that's not going anywhere anytime soon, however the new one will certainly sell to many more public buyers than the 5k p/a the old one did.

The old Defender.Hmm, fact wise it didn't make everyone happy at all as it only sold to 5k public buyers and 15k fleet on average in its last few years. The percentage of people that did like it enough to actually buy it new out of all potential 4x4 buyers worldwide would have been phenomenally low.

nahh landrover already did that about 30 years but no one wanted them the production run stopped after about the 27th one.

All except for the "little hooky thing" Toyota have been making what you are looking for for a long time now, Landrover missed that boat decades ago.
The new defender is by all accounts a good luxury SUV But it is nowhere near as versatile or as tough as a 70 series ute or twincab is.

Maybe IF JLR developed the new defender and called it for what it really is a Discovery6 and developed a NO Nonsense 4WD ute that matched or even bettered the Jap offerings then Maybe I would be interested enough to buy one.

Personally a tray back (with or without a canopy) is much more suited to my off-roading needs especially if it has at least a ton of carrying capacity.
There is No way in the world anyone would chuck their sandy/stinky fishing gear and fish or freshly shot goats/pigs in the back of a flash new SUV Yet wouldn't think twice about doing it on the back of a brand new trayback, Not to mention muddy/wet camping gear, oily tools and pretty much anything else that will never see the insides of a new defender.

Then we have the monocoque chassis, Will it outlast a steel ladder frame chassis after years of punishment and abuse like the old defenders or even the d1 d2's do?

Besides there has never been a more anemic V8 Diesel produced In all motoring history.
And that’s before we even start critiquing other failings!!!

SteveIt's not bad engineering, just very conservative. Which is why they struggle to make good power, good fuel economy and reliability. If I asked if people wanted a car that gave below average fuel economy, with lower performance, and were willing to pay more for it, I think I'd get a poor response. Yet marketing bets reality most times.
Toyota's good performance cars have nearly always had other manufacturer's engines in them - Yamaha (or Kawasaki?), Subaru and BMW all spring to mind.

But the thing that would have kept a lot more happier would have been to produce a workhorse version of the one we see (with multiple body styles), or even a plan to do this. Without this, as others have pointed out, it more closely resembles a Discovery than a Defender. Adaptability to multiple body styles has always been the hallmark of the Defender and its predecessors.

Apparently the Defender could not be continued as it was , I accept that.

Clearly the new machine is not and never will be a Defender, JLR have made a huge mistake calling it a Defender when in fact it should have been called a Discovery . And that D5 stopgap, why did they even bother ??

Ive never been in the market for a Discovery & will never buy one .

If Jeep can build the new Gladiator ,(Live Axle Dual Cab Ute) theres no reason JLR could not have done the same with Defender and made proper inroads into the US Market, something the Pretender will not do.

Good point,Holden kept the Commodore name,and look whats happened to them since local manufacturing was discontinued.

Ford, on the other hand have done better,the Falcon name was dropped.

JLR also killed off the Discovery,the D5 isn't really a Disco.

And they watered down the RR name by calling the Epoke a RR.

Oh well,good luck to them,the D4 will more than likely our last LR,unless the new Defender impresses us once we can get a look at it.

We wil move to another brand,there is no option.
