Thought I'd give the old girl a treat and ordered this pioneer 7 inch flip out screen apple car play/ android auto unit while it was on a discount .
Just in case anyone wants to do the same

yes, shouldn't even need a patch lead to make them work, but we'll see when it gets here.

I have a slight itch to upgrade to something similar in Charlie, so I'll be interested to hear how you go with hooking up the Steering Wheel Controls. It would be awesome if it didn't need a patch lead/adapter box.

Will keep you posted, though I've since found out they have sent the unit with a courier otherwise known as sloway[bigsad], so might be a few weeks ( eta 19/12 ) ordered on 27/11.

Is there progress with the LSE ?

but doesn't have a dedicated GPS ... only Google Maps ... so only usable with an internet connection.
Pity. :-(

Shouldn't be a problem , just load offline mapping , use google maps for main roads / cities , load off road maps on to your phone via app of your choice( even mid range phones should have gps, glonass etc as well as gps-a ), mirror phone to head unit for remote areas.

Yessum, I used offline google maps in the USA, no data at all, the GPS in the phone worked well.

From my research both android auto and Apple CarPlay only support a limited number of apps through the interface. Google maps offline will work but the other common offline apps like HERE, maps.me, Hema etc, won’t display on the head unit screen, only the phone.

That said I’d be interested to hear if others have found an off line mapping app that is CarPlay/android auto compatible.

I was hoping to use the built in weblink for Here maps, as I have used them offline with success in out of the way places, but that was with the old Nokia and then windows phone where it was built in.
I'm now having to retire windows phone and assumed android would give more choice but found this one for carplay

I like the idea of the android head units with built in everything but too many issues

Good find! It’s nice and surprising to see apple allowing other navigation apps access the interface. I would have thought Android would have done it first but there you go.

Have fitted it , but the D2 has been on loan for a couple of weeks, should be back soon I hope.
The unit works perfectly though I couldn't get the swc to work using the methods described to me by the "tech".
When I get it back I will see what the local fitter comes up with and report back.
The unit itself is great with much improved sound quality ,very clear screen, better radio reception, top notch bluetooth etc , but I'm not sold on android auto , for a couple of reasons, one of them being the default auto start of maps which you cannot change in settings ( I'm sure most people don't need mapping every time you jump in the car )
