I am currently in the position of purchasing a new (second hand) transfer case for my 87 Hiline 3.5 EFI.
The old transfer case centre diff was detroyed by unthinking other persons and they are footing the bill. The old case is 1:1.222 ratio. I am thinking of fitting a later spec LT230Q , to get the benefit of the quieter gearset. From memory these TCs are 1:1.003 ratio, ie a little taller.
Do you think I will notice the difference in ratios, given that I am running a 5 speed manual box, standard diffs and 255/65 16 tyres?

Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon,

Is that one out of a Disco? It sounds like it.

I think the only time you'll notice any difference is when on a long run up the HWY as I think the Lo range is the same... but don't quote me on that. :)

Choice is made, Series 2 transfer case is now ordered. I have been informed that the ratios are the same as what has come out of the Rangie.

Series 2? Errr.. Which Series 2?

If it's a Series II Disco & you want to use Diff Lock then make sure you get one that can....

Yes, Series 2 Discovery. I did double check, it will be fitted with CDL. Also having a speedo drive fitted...

The replacement transfer case has arrived. It looks to be in excellent condition (thanks TRS) and is only of a slightly different ratio.
The old T/C is 1.222, the new one is1.211. I don't think that I will notice the difference that such a small change makes. Now all I have to do is fit it and the extractors and the Rangie will be all set to go (provided the alternator fault is rectified).

I'm sure there's a joke there somewhere.... :p

Transfer case is in, although front and rear propshafts are not. While I was under there I removed the Boge self levelling unit (will see what my articulation is like once the vehicle is running again).
