View Full Version : Phone mounting options

Hey guys,

Just want to know how everyone is mounting their phones for hands-free in the car?

Sometimes Google maps is alot better than OEM nav.

I've got a magnetic phone holder but not sure if it will stick to the perforated leather on the dash.

Plus I also have a dash mat and going to stick that in place with Velcro, so can't mount on the dash.

Windscreen is an option but kind of in the field of view.

Feel free to post photos of the setup you have.

Thanks

Hi

I have used a Windscreen mount from Jaycar to hold my 7 inch Android tablet. It mounts in the centre of my windscreen, as low as possible, and it is angled towards me so it is not too obtrusive. The Android then sites about 5 inches away from the windscreen.

The site Custom mounts and holder solutions for your car, phone and other devices (https://www.holdmyphone.com.au) has a number of options for Landrovers depending on the model.

Nothing that won't damage it permanently will stick to perforated leather :-)

Cars are for driving! Driving is a skill.
Phones are irrelevant!!
It really disgusts me that it's now a thing, that it's somehow now more important that one can use ones phone whilst one is driving, and that, that, is now more important than actually being in charge of the vehicle!!!
Pathetic!

That's a reasonable thing to do whilst driving as it is hands free and perfectly legal when it is mounted correctly. Or they could look at the Gregories or UBD Street on the passenger seat while driving and flip over the pages whilst stopped at traffic lights :-) Take your pick.

I have the ClicOn bracket from Hold My Phone (https://www.holdmyphone.com.au/centre-mount-78850.html) and hard wired power to an adjustable holder. It's set up so the power is permanent so I can charge the phone easily when camping. I've used ClicOn in the last 4 vehicles and have been very happy with the product. I only ever use the factory GPS when off-road and use Waze on my iPhone whenever I'm driving for the hazard warnings speed zones etc.

Some of us use phones as a tool when making a living. I need navigation to get to customer's sites, charging so the phone is available for customer support, emails and access to documents when on-site. Seems pretty relevant to me.

"NSW Legislation
Can be operated without touching any part of the phone, such as via Bluetooth or voice activation. Drivers are able to use their mobile phone as a driver's aid (e.g. GPS) only if the phone is in a cradle fixed to the vehicle and doesn't obscure their view of the road."

One solution would be an Apple CarPlay / Android Auto retrofit.

Navigating the Road Safety website to try and find the specific legislation is difficult. This is specific to GPS tablets.
https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/downloads/windscreen-mounted-phones-gps.pdf
However last year I did come across on their website a more detailed paragraph that also stated that the holder was "commercially available" - that statement mean I could not make one for myself. I had to purchase one at Jaycar.

If anyone can find the ACTUAL LEGISLATION that would be excellent. Saying "doesn't obscure their view" and saying that you should use one that is less than 6 inches for a larger vehicle and less than 5.5 inches for compact vehicles is open to interpretation by both ourselves and the Police. In engineering and science and legally there is a difference between should and must.

Addendum: Just found this:
Road Rules 2014, Part 18 Division 1 Rule 299 (Current version for 29 November 2019 to date) and also Rule 300.

I don't use a holder anymore , I just lay my phone down in the top dash tray and let Bluetooth do it's thing.

I use Galaxy Note 10 and have it located in a wireless charger holder that is stuck on the slider over the drink holders. I use a speed camera app that advises me if I exceed the speed limit and listen to music. Phone is handled by blue tooth . I can glance at phone if I need confirmation of speed limit in current location.

If it's bluetooth it will probably work in the glovebox. That way its not at all accessible and less for any one to argue with that you might have been using it.
Check the regulations. I know I can't legally use the Android for navigation with it sitting on the passenger seat. It has to be affixed.

Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has got one.

There are plenty of legitimate (and legal) reasons why someone would want to mount a phone in their car.

Unlike talking on a CB or HF radio? Aside from that, he was asking about how to mount his telephone. Not for an opinion.
Not sure what telephone you use, but if you haven’t noticed, they do a lot more than make calls. I have my OBDII port linked wirelessly, so all my engine readouts come through.

I use a RAM X-Mount. Same as we use in fire-brigade and can also go on my boat. Mount to lower right windscreen. The one I have can fit an iPhone X with Otterbox Defender case. Only catch is it takes two hands to open the grip and put in the phone. But it’s far from a piece of junk plastic.

Not legal in WA - phone must be out of sight or in a cradle... would be ok in glove box etc.

I have their version and also just drop my phone on a conventional Qi pad when home.

Works just fine.

Me too, including the same very minor issue with the two hand operation. Otherwise they are bulletproof.
I also use RAM Mounts for my iPad when we are travelling.

Yes that is true, I would rather use the Google or Waze map as the OEM nav in the car is outdated.

I do understand the frustration of having the phone for other uses and I too get annoyed when I see other drivers play with their phones while driving.

Put the phone on the screen instead...

I have looked into the android option but it is a costly one if compared to a cradle or mount. I have a 2015 model with the 10inch screen. Maybe I can upgrade the screen to have better system? I do know some cars have aftermarket android screens but not too keen in doing that.

I am in WA and did not know about the legalities of phone storage. I've got a magnetic mount so would that be considered a cradle?

I was thinking of mounting it on the right side of the screen and behind the indicator stalk. Kind of out the way of my view.

+1 for the quadlock mount - using their windshield Gen 1 mount which has some issues with the heat but i just stick it back on. no biggie.
also I've installed a 7" Single DIN Joying head unit, i'm slowly working out the NAV side but its basically an android head unit. install is pretty neat, and bluetooth for hands free.

I agree with others re the RAM mount - very adaptable and quick to fit a wide range of screen shapes and sizes and super strong suction mount. There's a cheaper version of these available on Ebay which comes up when you search on the RAMs...

Not with my in car wireless, mind you if you are going to use this mount you don't need the in car wireless. I tried the mount for my push bike but then could not use in car. I really like my in car wireless, drop the phone in and I am ready to go and the phone is charging. Also use a great app called double Twist which auto starts my music, internet radio or podcasts when the phone hooks up to Bluetooth.

Also while we are on the topic of bluetooth, does anyone else have the issue of slow or no response when using the steering wheel controls?

At time when I want to change songs and use the steering wheel buttons, it does not register no matter how many time or hard I press it. I end up using the touch screen which the OS is slow too.

Is there anything we can do at home to rectify this?
