Goodmorning all,

considering purchasing a L494 2014 RRS for the Mrs. Vehicle in question has low k's (50 odd) however is the 3.0 SDV6. I have completed a fair bit of research and know the issues regarding the crank and so forth. I am not creating a new thread to hear the dramas as there are substantial amounts on line already, but more so, is there any work-arounds to avoid the issue. Some say best oils and consistent servicing? it seems rather hit and miss though with some engines going a lot further whilst others not long at all. I believe once it fails a crate motor is the most feasible option to rectify. I am still not all that comfortable with as I know these vehicles are expensive, or are the forums over inflating a not so common issue? what would the cost of a replacement motor be? As I may need to consider this when purchasing or am I better off leaning towards a V8?

Thanks in advance

There are some very high mileage SDV6's around that have never had an issue. I am not sure what the issue is and it seems the debate has no real answer. I would think it is a matter of luck.

I had the SDV6 in a Disco 4 and really loved the engine. Smooth, powerful and economical.

Now have a RRS with the SDV8. Its the next level in power and drive ability, yet very economical.

I wouldn't go back to a V6 after having the V8, however you don't miss what you haven't got!

discojools........you may want to chime in here [smilebigeye]

Cheers, Craig

I second the feul economy of the V8. I am getting a real 8.8 per 100 k's. Would be interesting to see the numbers when towing I think they would be very similar to the SDV6

Engine failure in a used car is always an option.

A car with an impeccable service record and low milage may have been driven by a complete hoon and thrashed within an inch of its life since new.

On the other hand it may have a patchy service record and have really high milage with all the servicing done by an excellent indie (with no records kept) and may have been driven since new with a great deal of mechanical sympathy.

I reckon I know which one would last the longest and give the fewest problems. I also reckon I'd pass over the high mileage, incomplete service record car.

The trouble is with the tdv6 is that they fail randomly, but not frequently. The worst I read about on here was a late D4, before it’s 2nd service.

Otherwise they are a nice motor.

Thanks guys, would anyone happen to know a ballpark figure for a repair? Best and worst case?

Can't add value for the SDV6 but can relate my experience in a D3 TDV6. I owned the vehicle from new and the engine failed at about 270,000KM with no warning. The TDV6 has a known issue with no tangs on the crank bearings and the failure was swift with no warnings on a vehicle that had always been serviced on time with the correct lubricants.
My best case scenario for repair was ~12k for a territory engine swap but I suspect the repairer was charging me for his R&D costs.
I could source a Territory engine for about $2.5K but was not prepared to do the swap myself

Tote

Thanks Tote,
I've decided to give it a miss and will perhaps lean towards a V8

Cheers

Only comment I can make is that I'm about to hit 300,000km's on a SDV6 MY14. Engine is running fine and Castrol Edge Professional 5W30 C1 only ever used.
