Hi all,
I am looking at putting a roof rack on my D4. Now always having gutter mount vehicles need some advice regarding requirement. It seems to have 3/4 tracks as per attached photo. I am assuming I can fit a 3/4 rack to this easily with correct mounting brackets? Ideally I am after a full length as I also want to mount a solar panel, awning and rod holders. Is it a matter of just getting an extended roof rail kit? and then fixing with brackets? Prices seem to vary for the extended rails from $200 up. I did look at the Rhino Backbone system but cant really justify nearly $2k all up. Pretty sure the existing 3/4 track is Rhino anyway.
Cheers

If you have rhino 3/4 rails you can get a rhino full length pioneer platform and use rhino legs for the front position to the lower part of the roof. There’s been a few good threads on this and other options over the years, here's an example:

Platform vs Tray vs Basket (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/195993-platform-vs-tray-vs-basket.html)

This one is also useful:

Gavin,
I dont quite have the spare cash atm after just buying it and Xmas. If you have not sold it in a couple of weeks I may be interested. Are you going full length rails or 3/4?
Cheers

Some good options on gumtree. I just play the waiting game usually.

Not in a hurry to sell. Looking to change to lighter occasional use twin surf rack format to mount existing aerials and for the odd trip will use a long thin basket.

No worries thanks. Question is, will I need to buy anything else eg track or extended rails? Mine has the 3/4 track rails which I assume would need to be removed. Have had nothing to do with guterless systems before.

G'day again.
Being also newish to D4 from D2, I haven't yet worked out the details of how the roof system works either.

My initial research suggested that what I want to end up with is in the order of $400, hence my interest in doing a swap-over so that the various bits needed can be directly swapped over between vehicles, but the principle will also work if the other vehicle is a virgin.

I did have some preliminary discussions with a supplier in Cannington a couple of months ago, and will follow up for more info next week.
Cheers Gavin

Front Runner racks don't require tracks / rails of any description to be fitted. So to fit a full length FR rack just remove the existing 3/4 length track and your good to fit a full length FR rack. Nothing extra to buy.

Thanks Peter. So in the Craig scenario, I score his 3/4 track and rubbers and then fit my surf bars, and Craig gets my system as it stands and bolts the roof rack into the LR original fitted holes/nuts? I'd better double check in any event that I have all the rubber covers up there that the front runner might require.

Roger that, so if we do end up doing something the 3/4 track on mine might be some use for you then, depending what you want. From what I understand from the previous owner is they are Rhino. He didnt selll the bars with the D4, but apparently does want to sell them, not sure if it is what you want, but I know it was bars and a canoe lifter. I have pics of the bars and will put up here. If you want I can put you in contact or work out what he wants for them.

Craig and Gavin, this is now basically a commercial transaction being discussed between you two rather than a technical thread about roof rack options. Please take it to PM or some other means, otherwise this thread will have to go.

Fair comment/will do, but I'm still learning from the info provided to date.
Not all of us are gurus, and on any number of occasions I have learnt from comments on this brilliant site that fall into the grey area, so I for one always appreciate a little leeway.
