View Full Version : 2008 Puma 2.4 stalling more frequently in reverse. Idle jack issue?

Bit of a head-scratcher...

Back in November, I stalled the car reversing it out of the garage (normal driving conditions; high range CD not locked) which was a first for me and noticed over the next month the car stalling in reverse a few more times. in late Dec it got pretty serious and I needed to make a LOT of noise to get out of someone's driveway.
Shoes were no different, I have neither lost leg strength nor knowingly altered my technique so my conclusion is that something on the vehicle has changed.

It's almost as if the idle jack isn't kicking in as effectively in reverse as it does moving forwards....and that's confusing me.

Initial consultation with Brad at KLR was that the hand brake shoes could be binding a little - but then when he got it to stall in reverse and then put his foot on the clutch, the car kept moving backwards cleanly and with no noise....which would suggest the handbrake is working as designed.

Can you guys think of any reason why the idle jack would be different for reverse all of a sudden? If I'm reversing up any kind of slope I have to give it a bootful of revs but going up the same slope forwards, I can leave the idle jack to drive the car up without applying any throttle at all.

Would the heat of the end of last year have anything to do with it? Most incidences occurred in temps of over 35C, although coming out of my garage at home it wouldn't have been quite that warm.

Yours, somewhat confused,

Bobby
