View Full Version : 2.7 TDV6 rear timing belt - how to remove breather line

I've completed the front timing belt today and currently working on the rear one. Have the cover unclipped and partially opened but cannot remove it. Referred to the genuine Land Rover instructions and I believe that the breather hose (that isn't mentioned or pictured in Disco_Mikey's guide) seems to be the last obstacle. Any guidance on how to remove it? It seems to have a spring hose clamp but with the flat tabs and lack of clearance I'm not sure how to pinch it and remove - also then worried about being able to refit it. Any tips or tricks?

This mornings shopping:
Flexible hose clamp pliers - really like these as they lock on!
Long reach and normal length bent long nose pliers
Offset combination pliers

Hopefully one of them will get on easy enough...

For anyone interested, this is what JC uses:

I haven’t managed to find either for sale this morning.

Found online where to get one of the pliers (not that that helps you now).

Got the breather hose off with the flexible hose clamp pliers (have left them on it but suspect it will be interesting pushing it back on). Still cannot get that back belt cover any further out than:

I think the tabs on the bottom are catching on the belt/tensioner when trying to take it up as the bottom keeps pushing back in toward the engine so it's not getting clearance to come up. Feeling back there it seems that the rubber breather hose goes onto a metal hose and that is in the way for the cover.

Does it now unclip from the bottom so you can get it out of the way? (I’ve never done it so no idea sorry).

Got it out. The trick is that you just have to pretend that it's not 7 year old plastic and be rough with it. The gaps are all not big enough so it's constantly squeezing through and pushing on everything else to get out. Not looking forward to reassembly!

This is where you wish you’d clicked “buy” on that cheap USB inspection camera that keeps showing up in your adverts [emoji23]

I have one, find the quality of it to be useless. I did buy from Bunnings yesterday a Kincrome round mirror with an LED on the top that was good for looking behind there.

Agreed. I'd happily do the front belt again but wouldn't likely do a rear again.

Of course this didn't hold true. 10 months later and I'm having major regrets while doing it again on our new (to us) D4...

I did my belts 2 weeks ago on my D3 and didn't find it as bad as i had read but i think the D4 has a little less room at the back.
I didn't undo any breather hoses as that part of the cover doesn't need removal.

Yes, D4 has more to undo to get access and less room. I find the actual belt changeover easy and the reassembly very quick and easy - but don't enjoy the accessing part...
