Bearing on trailer noted as cooked when checking last week. I had a replacement which must have got a little metal or salt as it failed before fitting. Axel is 40mm and used Holden style bearings.

New back or inner bearing is not fitting. I assume but cannot see a little damage to the axel. Considering a fine file. Love the brains trust suggestions.

I did try ford style but knew it didn't fit before I started [biggrin]

I would have no hesitation in filing down any roughed-up areas.

emery paper dry to start with, oiled then wet and dry,

pull the paper with the end parallel and work your way around thebearing about 30 degrees about every 5 strokes.

The drawback with paper is that it will reduce even the unruffled areas whereas a flat file only knocks off the high spots.

I'd lightly file this too. It will just knock the top off the burr. Just with a smooth flat file using a counter rotation action rather than filing around the axle. The file will find the lumps for you.

Don’t go at it with a course b@stard file though. I’d
Suggest a fine micro file where yoI spot the issues. With many files to choose from, go as fine as you can.

I’d go emery before file, given the old one come off there cannot be too much stopping the new one going on .......we go this way for shaft 4-6 inches valued in the thousands of dollars.

Use both, emery cloth with a file as a backing piece

Thanks Brains Trust. I had the fine file ready but wanted a bit of confidence boost before trying it. Changed them several times but this was a first for me. Appreciate your help Gents
