View Full Version : How loud is the D3 turbo?

Hey Guys,
I'm about to buy a D3, and I just had a look at one (220Kms on the clock) has been looked after and seems quite clean.
I've only driven a V8, so I dont have much of a comparison, and I have had a Diesel turbo before (not a LR) so am familiar with the sound - however

I was concerned that the turbo may be on its way out, or it could just be normal, but the turbo seemed quite loud under boost - yes I had the window down also.
The car drove well and was very responsive.
There isn't any other real way to diagnose a turbo that is on its last legs, so was just wondering - is the turbo normally quite audible the tdv6 ?

I have no issue in changing the turbo, I have seen both methods, body off and inside the wheel arch, i have a hoist in my garage so either should be possible - but just wanted to know if there are any other tell tale signs form experienced owners.

Snorkel? Snorkel brings the intake sounds right up to the window.

Can’t say I have ever heard the turbo in my D4!

No Snorkel, No aftermarket exhaust!
Pretty bone stock standard.

Hmmm. Well the intake without the exhaust is also on the driver side vent but I don’t recall it making any noise before my snorkel. I wonder if it has a factory filter in it? Anyhow, maybe there’s a problem - maybe you have more sensitive hearing to me. Hard to judge without hearing it myself sorry.

Window down and radio off you can hear it spool up under load on the 2.7 TDV6. Window up and radio on you hear nothing.

I’m wondering if it’s a blown turbo to manifold gasket. That’ll give you a whistle under boost

Not sure with the D3, but on the D4 you can def hear both prinary and secondary turbos spool up/whistle under load, especially window down and radio off.

The tdv6 2.7 in the D3 has only 1 turbo, but its larger than the two on the SDV6 3.0 i believe.

A while ago we did some dusty tracks plus beach work where i was following a few cars. I turned the RAI upper part around to face backwards, to avoid ingesting more dust than necessary, and the turbo noise was even louder (sounded great actually)

Also check if the sound absorption mat that is pinned to the underside of the bonnet (at least on the D4 there is) is still there, that soaks up a lot of noise, but they deteriorate quite quick if this gets wet very often, so some people just remove it.

If the noise is just whistle then it could also be an afgermarket pressure relief valve?

Any other noise such as a very high pitched whine or screeching sound at low boost would indicate a mechanical issue with the turbo. Visual check on the outside will show any oil leaks around the turbo bearing area.
