View Full Version : Logic7 / Meridian Surround Sound Retrofit 2012-2016 D4

I thought i'd already posted a thread on this subject but can't seem to find it now.

If your 2012-2016 D4 has the 11-speaker "HI-ICE" sound system, i.e the Harman Kardon system in 2012-2013 models, or the Meridian 380W system in the 2014-2016 models, it's relatively straight forward to upgrade to the 17-speaker surround system; Harman Kardon Logic7 or Meridian Surround 825W.

Logic7, 2012-2013

Meridian Surround, 2014-2016
157892

Those six additional speakers are actually just three speakers, the one in the centre of the dash, and two rear surround speakers in the d-pillars.
The count is six because each speaker is a dual-cone, with a midrange and a tweeter, technically two speakers in one assembly.
157893

So adding that speaker to the dash, and the two d-pillars with the speakers.

You do need to swap the amplifier, but these are easy enough to find 2nd hand (I always have some on the shelf as spares).

And of course the wiring for these speakers is missing, but I make an overlay retrofit harness which simply plugs in to the speakers and the empty slots in the existing connectors.

About as close to OEM as you can get.

Some CCF changes are needed to enable the surround functions.
157898
But if you have a Nanocom, IID, etc it's DIY-able.

Hard to describe in words what a difference the surround makes over the standard system.
For a start it's more than double the rated power; 600W vs 1200W or 380W vs 825W, depending on which numbers you believe.
The centre speaker in the dash transforms the sound stage, as if the music is coming out of the whole dashboard.
You can't really point at a speaker and say "it's coming from there" the sound is so full and broad.
The contribution from the rear is subtle, but adds to the overall full sound.

Well worth the upgrade if you're into your music.

About how much?

That D panel looks like a different moulding to standard. Are they readily available?

It depends on if you go for new or used parts, if you do the install yourself, etc...

The wiring harness is $220 + postage
The amp you could pay anywhere from $150 to $750 2nd hand (forget new, talking thousands)
The rear pillars with speakers new are about $550 a pair, used ones hopefully cheaper if you can find them.
The centre speaker on it's own anywhere from $50 to $125 depending on new or used.
Takes me about 3hrs to make the installation, other people may need more time.

It's a factory part, but yes the d-pillar trim panel is different between the standard or surround system, also different between 5-seater or 7-seater.

I have a pair of 7-seat ones here on my shelf, brand new still in plastic, with the speakers. And a centre speaker as well.

My 2014 D4 is not surround but it's b loud. Can't imagine what one with near double the output power is like 🤤

It already has a centre speaker in the dash so I presume you are replacing this with a dual cone?

Also has DAB which is useless cept in the city.

It's awesome really. Not just double the power but the extra speakers make the sound so full.

All the cars were built with the centre speaker grille, but you'll find that there's no speaker in under there, it's empty.

DAB is good when you can receive it, but yeah it's only in the capitals.

Hi Cambo, really interesting to see your retrofitting. Dreaming of doing the same. I have today a Discovery 4 2014 with the meridian "high-line" and want to upgrade to the 825W system.
For a Meridian system is it still possible to use the logic 7 amplifier or do I need one rated to my -14 Meridian system? Dont know if the "intelligence" is within the amplifier or the cars internal system.

On the amplifier it says 12(from other treads, have not looked myself) and I can only count to 11 speakers(3 in each front door + 2 in back doors + sub) in my car, would it be possible to only add the center in the dashboard and connect to the already existing amplifier?

Always a fun work to modify cars. Happy to see more of your work

Hi,

The 380W Meridian has the "High-12" amp same as the Harman Kardon in the earlier models.

The 825W Meridian Surround needs a "Prem-16" amp which is a different amplifier to the Logic7 in the earlier cars, you can't run a Logic7 amp in a Meridian car & vice-versa.

The "High-12" amp cannot give you a centre speaker channel.

If you're counting speakers, the subwoofer actually is a dual-voice-coil and there are two channels from the amp to the sub.

thank you for your quick feedback :)
Are there any problems to mount the connectors to the center speaker. Im afraid that I need to remove the full dash before Im done :P

No worries.

The wiring for the centre speaker is already there, from the speaker location down to a connector in the right hand kick panel at the bottom of the a-pillar.

The wiring is missing from that connector in the a-pillar back to the amplifier, and all the wiring for the rear surround speakers is missing.

That's why I make a retrofit harness for this particular job.

That sounds great, thank you so much for your expertise.

Yes you do. It's hidden under the carpet.

Must be well hidden as I thought you would feel the "holes" that would let the sound out. As I was "poking" around in the back I opened the pocket where the tow hitch is stored, and saw this. What is that?

That's the blower for the rear aircon.

Can you do this retrofit on a D5 HSE MY19?

It's in the lower section of the tailgate, there's no vents for it, if you have the 380W Meridian, it's in there...

Can you do this retrofit on a D5 HSE MY19?
That really depends on what we are starting with.

If it's got the InControl Touch, then no. If it's got the InControl Touch Pro, then yes.

I've got d-pillars, one speaker (need two more) but no red label Logic7 amps at the moment.

Hi there. Ive got a 2013 d4. It had the standard h and k system in it. I bought a logic 7 amp but the connectors are different. So had to buy a premium 16 amp which fits. When I change the ccf to premium system it shows logic 7 on the audio settings but it won't let me select it. Any ideas

Contact Cambo (he’s a member of AULRO). Type in ‘Cambo old jaguar’ into Google and select the 1st option that comes up as a Facebook link. His web page and mobile number is on the fb page. He’s a wiz at D4 sounds. He gave me lots of advice when I was installing my surround sound to my 2013
