Steering Shake

Howdy all

Just started to develop a steering wheel shake when under moderate braking and looking at suggestions as to what it may be. Thoughts so far are;
Wheel balance out - looked at the front wheels and can not see any dislodged wheel weights but still could be the issue.
Brakes low - Front brakes were last done at 80k, currently at 110k
Steering components - cursory glance only and nothing bent or looking worn but who knows without getting on a hoist.
LCAs - no clunking or other tell tale noises usually associated with them.

I'm probably going to the wheel shop first as a balance is the cheapest possible solution but is there anything else before I head the mechanic?

Check LCA's first. Just jack up the front until the wheels are free and use a long tyre lever or pry bar between the chassis and arm. Any looseness will be immediately obvious.

But how much movement is normal versus bad...

Slight movement under tension is OK, after all that's what the hydra bushes are designed to do. Any clunking or jerkiness felt through the pry bar indicates a worn bush.

Ours did that..LCAs were suspected but new rotors and pads fix it 100%

I've been through this last year. New rotors made it completely disappear for a couple of months, however it slowly returned. Changed the LCA as the rear bush was shot and also new pads at the same time (moved away from bendix to akebono). That made a big difference straight away, with a slight shudder remaining that improved with more braking on the new pads.

Just an update on this issue. I had the front wheels balanced today and it seems to have solved my problem. Will get other components checked out next service but otherwise $20 well spent.

Just an update to this. The problem did not disappear as I thought, so I had the front rotors and pads changed and now the problem has definitely gone. Rotors were the originals and had done 115k. I didn't get them measured to check the wear, if someone is wondering, but they had been through two sets of pads.

I’ve got it too. Bloody annoying. Pads and discs are 15 months old so it’s weird that it happened after so long.

The good news is that it's not a very expensive fix especially if you do them yourself.
