Pope Falcon hand plane

I must stop going to Trash & treasure Markets........

Picked up a Pope Falcon hand plane (F4) at the weekend for $10, shown between a Stanley No 4 1/2 and a Stanley No 3 in the picture.

I have quite a few planes collected (and sometimes used) over the years.
I have Dad's Stanley No 5, a Record Rabbet plane and a Stanley Plough plane.
Some years back I scored a Norris jointer which I just found out could pay for my next Land Rover !
There are numerous wooden planes, moulding planes, block planes a couple of Carter's numerous Stanleys, Records, Popes and a Rapier.

I'm looking for a No 8 jointer....do I need one ? Probably not. Would I use one ? Yes I would occasionally use it but can't justify the current prices !

I'm a member of a local woodwork club and there isn't a single hand plane in the building, instead routers, jointers and thicknessers have taken over.


Do we need a woodwork or hand tool section on the forum ?

Every couple of months the local Richmond Lions Club run a market on a Saturday at the Haweksbury show grounds (same place as this years Land Rover Expo) and there is usually a guy who seems to have dozens of planes amongst other older hand tools like spoke shaves. Always interesting looking through what he has. I bought a Stanley brace and some bits off him a while ago, and no I have never used them though they pride of place in the shed ;-)

Hi Simon,
I have a few braces & lots of bits, they do get used .....
I use spokeshaves & drawknives in another hobby, making rocking horses and managed to get a compass plane a while back (the sole can be adjusted to be convex or concave). It's not complete but one day I'll be able to use it in anger.
There are also a few Stanley Yankee screwdrivers in the shed but getting bits for them is difficult.

My wife seems to think I'm a hoarder !

Is Pope the company that made it?

Maybe the same as the old Pope box AC units,they all had bird names as well,Dove,Pelican,Wren,Hawk,etc.

It's Pope as in the garden sprinkler company.
The planes were made mid 40's to late 50's.

I saw that and thought that would be cool[biggrin]

Thinking more about the AC units they were good quality built solid like an old HQ Holden,bloody heavy.
The wren was the smallest,the Pelican the largest.
Some of the biggest pelican models were 3 Phase,came with a separate switchboard wall mounted adjacent to the AC unit,with around 100 wires going between the AC and the panel[bighmmm]
They were used extensively buy Telecom,or whoever they were in those days,SEQEB,and in labs at Universities.

Not quite - I didn't. I can't remember the brand of the one I had -"Ranger?". But I clearly remember the Ned Kelly one. Black finish and a distinctive foresight that had a sharp corner likely to cause damage in scuffles.
