Hey All,

Am enjoying my Friday to date as have had rather a tough week, as we all get at some times  . Was thinking of a thread and thought of this one as it does intrigue me as to some of the profile names and where they come from or how they were made up. Mines pretty simple ( bit like myself  ) name is Stephen, born in 1968, so Stevo68 :D with numberplates SHC68 which is my initials. So feel free to share

Regards

Stevo

Mine came from gaming, as I wanted something that would stand out a little, and it's sorta stuck.

I went on a sailing holiday quite a few years ago and set up a hotmail account to keep in touch with friends (stusgonesailing)

the name stuck.

Greylandy
26th May 2006, 10:16 AM
I've got two Defenders .. a white 110 Hardtop and a 110 TD5 Extreme. Before I got the extreme we always referred to the hardtop as "the landy". When I bought the extreme (grey in colour) we had to distinguish between the two so the new one was called "the greylandy" ... it stuck .. so much so that I named our website www.greylandy.com (http://www.greylandy.com)

Yeah I know .. not very imaginative!!! ;)

bluetongue
26th May 2006, 10:57 AM
I started using the name Bluetongue since I came back from o/s a few years back... I used to have a website so we could share our photos... and it was a good-aussie-name for a lizard.

Then, last xmas I bought myself a cobar-blue defender from a bloke in qld who was a lizard/reptile guy working at one of the zoos up there. When I started up on AULRO it wasn't taken so I grabbed it.

Used it origionally on Ausfish.com.au as I couldn't think of much else at the time, and just so that I would remember what the user name was at all the sites I go to it was best to keep it the same, the KISS principle:rolleyes:

Hmmm apart from always trying to be a non-conformist (originally just to **** off teachers at school) and do everything different to make a point... kinda like my original idol from back then The Fonz ;) then started a dance club which stretched across a few states "The Outlaws" and a web desgn business "Outlaws Promotions" so been using the name for around 15 years now.

Aquarangie- Because I used to have a aqua coloured Rangie which was in fact agean (93 Vogue plus, or 'minus' by the time I removed the air suspension, ABS and viscous coupling box!!) and I drowned it a few times early in the piece.

Also I used to have a site called 'the aquarangie page' and was deciding on a name and that one sounded alright, well after a few coldies that is :D :D

mr_sav part thereof of my last name.

It used to be savvy, though as many have come to point out to me, that this nick when associated with me is actually an oxymoron.

I have just shipped my much loved 3.9 110 of to Katherine to a new owner, to only see my new investment a much despised 3.9 110 of the same ilk turnout to really be a deep black hole for which wheelbarrows of money can not fill.

Not so savvy.

Ah the good old joke- What do you do if a bird craps on your windscreen?

Dont take her out again. :D

I just kill myself sometimes.:D

Its a long story but i dont have a life so i will tell you.

It all started in 2003 when i used trips to the movies as bribes to make the 4 boys in my Yr11 Chemistry class work harder, in return for certain grades i would transport them to a movie in bathurst (60km away there isnt one in lithgow) we would see the movie and then i would drop them home. On the way to the first movie i took them to they asked me what they should call me as "Sir" or "Mr Holden" seemed weird and it would be embarrassing from my point of view being seen at the movies being followed around by 4 17yr old boys calling me sir. So i blirted out Ace as a joke, that came from Rimmer the hollogram in Red Dwarf taking on the Alter ego Ace the fighter pilot whenever he has his fear removed by a monster or the like. It was only a joke but it stuck and all the kids called me that so all my school jumpers have ace on the back and now my forum name is that, it was taken on Overlander and 4wdmonthly but i got it here. BARNES, MATT BARNES.
since i first went to school i've been called just about every bastardisation of my surname. barney, barnesy, barnabus, barnwald....the list goes on, but barney pretty well stuck through high school and beyond. the five years between my older brother and i made him a barnesy, and my wife gets called barnesy.
mum used to call me 5h1thead!
maybe they're related????

For some strange reason, my (ex) wife liked to give our cars a name.
Me, I just call it the car.

Anyway, we got her a Rangie, and she called it Rex.
Then we got another Rangie for me, and she called it Ralf.
Actually, I think my daughter named him. Not sure.

So I'm not Ralf, the Rangie is.
I'm Harry (that's not my real name), but that's another story.

Fenian is a term used since the 1850's for Irish republican /nationalists who are against British rule in Ireland, and engage in or support most means possible to end it. Historically, it specifically refered to members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB).
Peelers, Prods, Brits and British security forces also use it in a derogatory manner to Irish people or supporters, i.e. "you Fenian bastard"

The term derives from the Irish Na Fianna or Na Fianna Eireann who in Celtic mythology were a band of warriors formed to protect Ireland, Fionn Mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) being the most famous of its warriors.

Eel refers to a pathetic/pathological love the user has for the footy team the Parramatta Eels. This term is also used in a derogatory manner by supporters of the Eels "those F%)^)^&& Eels give me the $%(^(" and also by supporters of better teams (at the present there are currently 13 of them). i.e. "The Eels - ha ha ha - they suck". Unfortunately at the time of writing - even the most subjective reader would have to agree:lol:

Thus FENIAN + EEL = ME!:D

I did post mine somewhere on this site, but it may have been on the old site.

Mine comes from the time when I was living in Switzerland and I was rather depressed at the time. There was a English radio series called "Round The Horn" and in that there was a character called Gruntfuttock who was living in "peasmouldya" this was how I felt at the time living in a small green country that was rotten and distasteful. Also it was a name that does conjours up different things to different people. But in reality it means nothing but it does get people talking!!!!

Timberwolf originally came from the computer game "Mechwarrier". It was the name of the best "mech" (combat vehicle) on the game. I started using it for online computer gaming, and email addresses.

I also use it as a radio callsign, when the situation permits.

302 was added as a number to prevent it being same as someone elses. If 302 was being used I would use other numbers like 351, 390, 428 (Ford V8 sizes). 302 was just the one I used the most.

If we are talking Avatars, the Leyland Australia logo is just showing my liking for Leyland products. I might update it soon, though...but for now, it looks good enough, despite the comparison with an ar*ehole.

I won't do the pronouncing thing. You can read.

When I bought the SII my wife (well, she wasn't then yet) thought it reminded her of a Polish cartoon character "Tuptus the Turtle"... so for the sake of everyone's sanity we just called it the "Turtle"... and 61 is the year. When I was younger (and better looking) I worked as a Model, now I'm older I do more acting. My name comes from the last big contract I had which was as the Tyrepower Pro for the Tyrepower chain of stores. My mates at the time of joining this site were calling me Mr Tyrepower. Ended up as a simple name to use. At the same time I was also on the Retra Vision adds..but I thought Retra Man didn't have the same ring as Tyrepower.
My latest project is a part in "The Eleventh Soldier" Synopsis below.

The Eleventh Soldier is the largest film production in Western Australia and the most exciting throughout Australia.
The movie set is one of the largest constructed in Australia to date consisting of bunkers, gun towers, mess halls, 2km of roads, communication HQ and its own power supply. On the days of filming there will be jeeps,
trucks, tanks, heavy artillery and machine guns on set.
The film is being shot on super 35mm film with all post production, sound and special effects being done at Double G Studios.
Together with the most talented cast ever assembled in Western Australia for a single film project and the most experienced crew, Cinematographer flown in from Melbourne and the make up artist from "Spiderman 2" etc, the film makers hope to bring the story of "The Eleventh Soldier" to life on an epic scale.
Please visit the films web site for more information plus see cast interviews and teaser trailer.

Mines a very long and convoluted story:

One of the most useful tools i have (especially for home renovations) is one that i made by accident.

I was pulling up glued down lino with a 4" spatula when it snapped in half so it became 1.5" spatula, a few days later i couldn't find any Stanley knife blades to scrape back the paint on the windows so i sharpened the broken spatula on the grinder then finished it off on the oil stone. Effectively creating a razor sharp blade on a large wooden handle, sort of like a chisel.

Anyway not having a name for it, and having to say "pass me the broken spatula chisel thing" it got nicknamed by my eldest son the "GrumpyBastard Tool" because its a lethal weapon that a Grumpbastard might just use.

So it was called the "GrumpyBastard Tool" and since i was the one who used the tool i became the "GrumpyBastard" by default.

And funny enough i have yet to encounter anyone else who calls themself GB online, so it makes life easy for me with just one username :)

Scallops originated from my lack of fluency in NSW speak - I had moved from Adelaide to Armidale (now in Brisbane and lovin' it) and went down to Coffs for a seafood feed. When I saw Scallops for 30c each - I thought "bingo". Ordered 10 bucks worth of the buggers.

The fisho thought I was mad when I lost it at being given a armful of potato cakes wrapped in newspaper! My dear friends won't let me forget it - so its Scallops from now on.

Yes - although not just an Americanism, I think that grated potato soaked in fat and cooked in fat so as to make it as unhealthy as possible really is an American invention. Not quite the same as potato cakes, which are mashed potato fried.

weird huh? Scallops to me are bivalve invertebrates that tastes feckin great! back when I lived there, everytime I went diving I'd take the daily bag limit of 100 pieces (takes about 10 minutes in port phillip bay)...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scallop

so how a deep fried slice of potatoe which had been dipped in batter became known as a 'scallop' in NSW is weird... it must come from scallop/ed potatoe au gratin? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalloped_potatoes

I had stumbled on the site, was browsing as a guest, saw that there were advantages in registering, was keen to search the forum for a particular piece of information so needed to register quickly, needed something I could remember, assumed all the interesting nicknames would already be taken, couldn't be bothered trying a few to try to find one that was still available, so just used my number plate.

AH! Army days. I remember 2 guys with difficult names in basic training. So the sarg. would call one "shoelace" and the other "wheel barrow" and if they didn't respond at roll call he would say "C'mon you know who you are". :D

Hands up all those who remember "Round the Horn". In fact I have some CD's that have the Goons, Round the Horn and a lot of English humour They keep me sane in the face of all that Yank drivel they call humour :D :D

Barra1 came about on one of my fishing trips to the NT. Two boats - and when we caught a barra we would get onto the radio with the call "Barra1 to Barra2" - you hear that and you knew the blokes in the other boat had caught a barra worthy of mention....tended to ignore their calls after a while.

I got a bigger boat and enforced the rule - I've got the big boat so I'm now Barra1 - regardless:p

I guess if my name changes to Barra2 it means "Ducky" (my fishing mate) has got himself a bigger boat than mine.:o

9th March 2008, 01:06 AM
Mines a throwback to when I first started working with the IT industry, Back when EGA was standard and VGA was cool, I got hooked up by a mate of a friend of a pal who ran the roundtable BBS in perth. the bloke who ran it was heavily into medievil things and everyone who worked with the BBS had their own nick assigned. I did data security and system integrity type work as was considered the protector of the round table everything then had to be 8.3 complient for names so we had

KingArthr for the boss
LdyGwnvr for his missus and 2IC
and
Blknight for me.

I sort of liked it so I kept it. I use it everywhere I can and almost always include aus or OZ in it seperated by ._-' or ` and for those who remeber when arcade machines only let you have 3 letters for a high score BKN was me.

oh, side note, if you ever get a file from me with the file extention set to BKN its a text file or a zip file encrypted using blknight as the password.

Well 2 Rocks is where I live (though sadly that might be changing soon). The plates weren't taken when I got my old Pajero so it seemed sensible to use it on various forums. Not very exciting, but...

...on AUSJEEPOFFROAD.COM (http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com) I go by Shetani. Now the shetani are generally nasty devil spirits as carved by the Makonde people of eastern Africa...and the subject of a book called "Into the out of" by Alan Dean Foster. Guess those plates probably aren't taken either :)

We call the Rangie "Bulldog".

My wife called her yellow Corolla "Tweety", so my car became "Sylvester", so "Bulldog" seemed to fit for the Rangie. It was supposed to be the dog's name in the Looney Tunes cartoon - the big grey dog with the little one jumping around it's feet saying "do you wanna play?". Now i think about it, its name was "Butch"... Does that sound right?

EDIT: if Butch is right, i'm not changing the Rangies name, or my user name!

Hi matey, just so you know, I charge $30/hour and will see a rover V8 running in a couple of hours, then its up to your brother how far he'd like to go with it, how neat a job, tidying the original loom, stuff like that

Make sure he has the full loom and relay setup from the 3.9 and its a relatively easy job, as the loom only interfaces through a few plugs;)

Dances With Trees
19th March 2008, 07:16 AM
Dances with trees goes a long way back, mainly because the fool things, trees that is, tend to jump out in front of me every time I am off road.
My competition disko trashed a rear 1/4 panel on a tree, and once I got it fixed she decided to roll and when she stopped was leaning against the same 1/4 panel. I gave up motocross because of the sill trees. When i moved on to Mountain Bike Racing, you guessed it, more trees.
I now have a 90, heavily armored, but every time out...
Why do trees want to dance with me?:D:D:D

How interesting to read these posts, we were only discussing this subject a few days ago.

"Bundalene" is the name of a property (named by the previous owner). It's our "bush retreat" in Central NSW. We've had it just on 20 years now and it's where we go to escape the rat race. Both our children learnt their bush skills there and over the years we have built a very comfortable shack out of local rocks, constructed a hot water system out of an old 18 gallon beer keg, and built a (flushing) dunny.....and have had a LOT of fun doing it.
Happy hour sitting on the verandah watching the sun set and the black cockatoos flying past and the wallabies is just the best.:D

Tempest is the internal code name used in Solihul for the Discovery Series II project.

So since I have a V8 powered Discovery II, the name "tempestv8" came about.

The internal code names for the V8 engine was Thor (and for the TD5 engine was Storm)

But "tempestthor" didn't sound right.... so tempestv8 it was. ;)

BBC came from my baptism in with my Mother Hash, the Maputo Hash House Harriers (MH3).

For the yet to be informed, Hash House Harriering is a collection of drinkers with a running problem, generally comprised of expatriates, that solve their running problems by getting together, drinking, and sometimes running.

Usually bawdy and illegible, ritualistic, and normally nonsensical; best way I could put it.
