Output shaft exploded today in NZ. Dealer wants $3000 to fit Ashcroft replacement.
No warranty, mechanical breakdown insurance says it’s nit covered because I do my own oil changes.

Tough day

How many KM.
Don't know how changing the oil affects this.
If you get insurance they will only fit genuine part.
Seems a bit steep as parts are sub $1000
and you don't have to remove the gearbox.

135K kms. Land Rover NZ only fit the Ashcroft part, they say they are now standard replacement for the original. They want $1800 for the Ashcroft, which I can online for $600.

Sounds like you need to sack your insurer, or push them harder. The original component is not lubricated after leaving the factory. The Ashcroft one is.

Hi,

I got this done in 2016 on my 2012 Defender mileage 31003 km as I had heard that this issue will cause an inconvenient breakdown.
I imported the shaft from Ashcroft cost GBP 285, postage GBP 59, NZ Customs etc NZD $174.
Duncan and Ebbett here in Hamilton did the work and charged $1038 for the work - Labour = 5.5 hours + some other parts and oil.

Hamilton NZ.

No way should it cost that much, and there is no reason for the dealer to force you to use the Ashcroft replacement, I just bought the kit from Output Shaft Repair Kit MT82 (Britpart) DA2720 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order. (https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/output-shaft-repair-mt82-britpart-da2720-tud500020-lr030054-p-36221.html) and did the grease nipple modification.
The transfer case does need to be removed, and the hardest part of the job is to remove the piece that goes into the gearbox output shaft, so you can replace the seal.

Hello

I wish to complete preventative maintenance on my 2010 Defender 90 2.4, and replace the MT82 shaft, and seeking wider advice between the Ashcroft solution or the Entreq design.

Please refer to links below. If links read in German, please view via Safari and click translate in view.

Achsen und Antrieb | Entreq (https://entreq.de/achsen-und-antrieb/)
Zwischenwelle (Satz) TD4 | Entreq (https://entreq.de/produkte/zwischenwelle-satz-td4/)

Ashcroft Transmissions (https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/mt82-output-shaft-kit.html)

The two solutions appear to solve from different views - Ashcroft introduce lubrication to protect the shaft whereas Entreq introduce a higher load capacity / corrosion resistant material to mitigate failure.

Advice appreciated

Patrick

Not familiar with the Entreq option, but I have the Ashcroft part fitted, as do MANY others with, to the best of my knowledge, no problems. Certainly no issues with mine.

There is another option, a relatively recent one: LOF EXTREMEspec MT82 Output shaft kit for Defender TDCI - Land Rover Clutches (https://lofclutches.com/shop/clutches/clutch-kits/lof-extremespec-mt82-output-shaft-kit-for-defender-tdci/)

No experience with this last one - prolly worth a bit of research.

Thanks for listing the LOF alternative - appears a thoughtout design

If any one has fitted the unit I would welcome feedback

I have just fitted a LOF shaft and clutch, both seem like great bits of kit. It has removed 99% of the backlash from my drivetrain and my original output shaft had no noticeable wear.

Ashcroft Transmissions MT82 kit
*I've fitted quite a few (about 2 or 3 a month) of the Ashcroft kits (version 3, the red coupler) and pretty happy with the results.
*The Ashcroft kit the material from memory is round that 50 in hardness on the Rockwell scale.
*The original adaptor floats around 20 - 25 on the Rockwell scale, which is too soft.
*Also the customer support from Ashcroft Transmissions is pretty dam faultless, orders are never delayed and nothing is ever a problem.

Clutches
*I'm now using ClutchFix kits, these seem nicely made and are at the top spec for clamping force, build quality that I am looking for.
*The LOF clutch kits again seem to be in that top end of good clutches, BUT (this is just a personal comment) I find LOF difficult to deal with.
*ALSO all the clutch manufacturers seem to be short of clutch material at the moment, I have run out of clutch kits and currently can't get anything.

When doing a clutch on any Defender TDCi (2.4, 2.2) I always do and recommend replacing the below;
LR068979 Cylinder Clutch Slave
LR068981 Adapter
LR068982 Valve Control
LR004390 Spigot bearing
The Flywheel surprisingly enough are a good quality item and dont often need machining. As in very rare to see them with any signs of hot spots etc.

I'm guessing they are the only Land Rover repairer in the area?

I like other repairers (Perth, W.A) do the complete clutch assembly and adaptor shaft for that price.

Both LOF and Ashcroft are excellent to deal with and top quality. Airfreight is super fast.

Whilst I dont have any direct feedback from myself not owning a Puma, we have sold a number of these since their release (always aim to have them in stock here locally)
Nothing but good reports back so far.

We are suppliers for Ashcroft gear as well, so I'm not bias at all, but the LOF kit to me anyway looks and feels way better out of the box, and also from not only a design perspective - but also cost!

Just received my LOF shaft from Kingpin.

Any recommended installers in Melbourne?

Rick, welcome your response.
