Mmm just read about a guy the bogged in Nolan’s and despite having a snorkel it drowned. Obviously a faulty install or leak..

Going up in August - how would you test that the snorkel is water tight?

Thinking of blocking the bottom as it enters the air filter box and then filling the snorkel with water and monitor the level but perhaps someone has a simpler method..?

Also see there is a one way rubber valve in the bottom of the air filter box to allow water to drain out if it gets in but not sure I trust it in deep water - does anyone seal that shut?

Plastic bag over the head of the snorkel while the engine is idling. Engine should stall and the bag should be held tight over the intake by the vacuum caused. This vacuum should hold.

Bear in mind that there was (still is) an open hole in the bottom of my air box, see here Hole in the bottom of TDV6 air box, normal? (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/266427-hole-bottom-tdv6-air-box-normal.html)

Seal up that drain hole in the bottom. I used a rubber washer from a trailer mudflap cut to size, and a m6 stainless nut and bolt to hold it in place, then silicone around the inside to seal.

The plastic bag over the intake test is sufficient to test for air/water tightness IMHO. If it holds vacuum then its ok.

And use common sense.

We got there one trip and it was 350mm over the bonnet of the D2,we gave it a miss.Palm creek was bonnet depth as well,we got through.
There was a drowned Jeep, and a drowned D3 at the Nolan crossing.

The next trip Nolans was bonnet level, and we crossed no worries, but be careful,as the TD5 fan will hit the rad at times, use a blind across the front of the vehicle.

There are other deep crossings as well,Logan is one,the others have disappeared from my memory.

Pascoe river crossing is always fun, steep, but not deep.

Good luck on your trip, its a fantastic place.
