Hi everyone. My hitachi compressor has been giving the "slow to vent" error which pointed to a blocked dryer. In the last week the compressor stopped pumping air and I pulled it apart today to find the guide ring on the piston disintegrated and a decent gouge in the side of the cylinder.

As I dont really want to spend $1.5k on a new air compressor i thought id see if anyone has an old hitach compressor they dont need? I literally just need a finned cylinder wall that has an undamaged bore.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

This video is very useful for the disassembly. Rust should not be so bad in Australia.

Step 1 is the desiccant going to mush and creating the slow to fill problem. He explains it well. The easiest fix.

I hadn't though of that but I'm not sure if theres enough material to machine out and sleeve, or if anyone around here would do it for a reasonable price. Maybe I could send it to This Old Tony? [biggrin]. It seems not worth it if I can get a replacement cylinder.

I just installed a kit like the first, which is when I noticed the buggered cylinder. The second one looks promising. those are the two bits that I need! (as the piston seals are likely buggered now I've tried running it in a damaged cylinder).

Thanks

Yeah I was getting the error for no venting so bought a dessicant and seal kit, which I was going to put through the compressor this weekend. Unfortunately the compressor gave out on Monday or Tuesday. Timing! [bawl]

If you google you will find all parts are available - and are reasonably cheap - start with these guys Air Suspension Repair (https://x8r.co.uk/products/land-rover/air-suspension-repair)

Pistons and cylinders

Also check out X8R and flick them a mail if thry can get the cylinder for you. The german kit also looks good, even includes a new piston and conrod.

No need for a new compressor, get the kit and rebuild, easy as.

So I have looked at the parts online and the earliest shipping date is 2 -4weeks, with others scheduled to arrive April to early May. I've had a new compressor delivered overnight which I was planning to put in today, however I managed to get the old damaged compressor to raise the car to normal height before pulling all the fuses. Ill probably still put the new pump in, though i now have some time to make a decision.

One issue I had was the front airbags weren't raising using the in cab lever. I had to jack up the front to full droop and run the compressor via the GAP IID tool until it stopped, then lower the car (i.e fill each airbag while it wasn't under load). I thought it was just a pressure issue, but the rear seemed to raise and lower no problem. I have two thoughts for this, one is a damaged front valve, but I also noticed the front left airbag is leaking oil and I was wondering if anyone else has had oil ender the air pipes via a busted shock in an airbag (the shock is 4 months old BTW - pretty annoyed at that).

At the moment the car is driveable, though I'm reluctant to stick the new compressor in if I have to order and wait for a valve block anyway - I'll buy the compressor parts instead.

Your thoughts are appreciated!

Cheers

Dan

Thats the first ive heard of a shock failing and leaking oil into the airbag.

My understanding of the system is that theres a front control valve block and a rear control valve block, then valves at each wheel. If the compressor dessicant ends up in the system as dust, it blocks the valve blocks and lines. You should be able to clear out the lines with compressed air.

Re shock, id be going back to the supplier and make a warranty claim.

Fit the new compressor and service / rebuild the old one for a spare.

I understand there is a central, a front and rear block. No valves at the shock themselves. In the front and rear there is a left, right, and crossover valve to allow for the raising or lowering of an independent corner, and cross link to allow air to move from one side to the other for cross-link scenarios. The central one is used to either provide pressurised air to a corner from the tank or to exhaust gas when lowering. Various valves can be opened at any one time.

Common valve block faults include leaking internally in the block or to atmosphere. As the system will see the lowering of a corner over time it will compensate by lowering the opposite corner to match, lowering and end of the vehicle evenly, rather than lopsided.

That’s enough, there’s more than enough about this on the internet and this forum.

Thanks guys. Its one of those things where it was working fine before the compresor failed and so i wasnt sure what caused it. There is a lot on the internet about the air system itself (i could easily find how to remove the front valve block) but I couldn't figure out what was causing the front springs to play up as there was no sign of deasicant getting into the airlines, and wanted to see if oil from the shock could be the culprit.

Plan at this stage is to pull out the front valve block and inspect it before putting the new compressor in. Once ive determined if the failed airbag has anything to do with it i will be calling the supplier and making a warranty claim.

Thanks again

Dan
