Uniden 9080 Install

Hi all, I know this has been discussed before, I researched extensively on this site to find ideas, but just a bit more food for thought.

Bought a Uniden 9080 remote head unit, decided to mount the unit on the driver side under tray, it's only 315g so not a lot of mass for the panel to support. I made some small plastic bushes to fit between the underside of the mounting cradle and the plastic panel, (just visible in the last photo) through the felt pad to support the cradle.There is an earth bolt which is located quite close to the RH location spigot which could be used to provide a bit more support but at this point I will see how it goes. From what I have read on the forum under the passengers seat seems to be a well used spot but this was very easy and close to my power and antenna connections coming through the firewall. The unit comes with an extension lead for the handset which I ran up to the cup holder, did the RJ45 plug into the cup holder idea, bought an RJ45 male to female panel mount from Core electronics (its called ModMyPi Panel Mount Ethernet - RJ45 Male to RJ45 Female) and with a bit of careful cut and file away we go.

Tray is quality work.

Concerned if you have a crash you may not have legs left though....

Yes, I give such things such as occupant protection a lot of thought. In the event of a frontal collision then the mass will take the unit slightly down and away from me toward the firewall, (at 20g it becomes 62N force) impact with lower leg is a unknown as is the undoubted reinforcement effect of the radio and bracket to the plastic under tray. In the end, if my lower legs are also getting to the firewall due to the forces in the collision, it ain't gunna be pretty, as they say, so I accept the risk of the mass and it's changes to the design intent.

Overall, very much agree with your general philosophy (read in other threads as well) on people's modifications and lack of appreciation about what happens in the event of loss of control or collision.
