Passenger Air Bag Switch

In November I bought a 2014 Discovery 4 SDV6 SE - my first step into the world of LR. It came with a 2014 owners handbook, but mine seems to be a lot more basic with less features/options than shown in the book. Still, I'm happy with it and learning the options that I do have.

One thing I am interested in is the ability to disable the passengers airbag, for no other reason that it seems to be just a switch missing. Earlier today I removed the cover plate for where the switch should normally sit and there is an electrical connector seemingly ready to be used. Is it as simple as buying a switch and connecting it in, or is there something more to this? Thanks, D.

It’s removed and covered as it’s illegal to disable it.

Seriously, it should be working and not disabled. It's expected to be fully operational in a car of that age.

Well in the UK the vehicle of the same age and model would have the switch so that argument is invalid. The switch was there so if you put a rear facing child seat in the front it could be disabled. In the Australian market we simply say no to that idea.

Now as to why you would want to actually add the switch? I dunno. OP? As for the law, Tombie is right. Here it would be illegal.

It's disabled in Australian spec vehicles, even if you fit the switch and edit the CCF to enable it, it still won't work.

I've wasted countless hours trying to make this work in a few different models, there is something deep in the vehicle software that prevents it from being retrofitted in Australian spec vehicles.

My advice, is just forget about it.

When my D4 was delivered the switch was in place.
Come the first service it was removed and the blanking plate fitted.

As AU law bans child seats in front rows in vehicles with rear seats it’s done for compliance.

I had cause to read up on NSW's take on child seat laws (they are different to some degree in every state, damn you Australia!) fairly recently. You can place a child seat in the front passenger seat in two instances:

1. The vehicle has only one row of seats.
2. All other seats are currently and necessarily occupied by compliant rear-facing car seats containing a child at the time.

Point 1 makes perfect sense. Point 2 has a heap of caveats and really that's a lot of kids! Damn!!!

I'd personally not be comfortable with a child seat in the front row, airbag or not.

OP, would I be right in guessing you are the kind of person (I'm that type) that has to push the red button purely because it says don't? Haha. It's killing you knowing that something is missing from your car even though you don't need it isn't it?!?!
