Then definitely don’t entertain Maxxis 980. Rugged but noisy.
Looking forward to hear the responses. All I’d say is some say the Maxxis aren’t noisy, so the term “noisy” is very subjective.

Whilst the LT245/70R17 Duratracs that I had on my D4 didn't howl, they produced too much noise for me especially on coarse gravelled bitumen to use them except when their traction might be needed. I got sick of changing wheels so for my L322 compromised with the milder and much quieter Pirelli AT+, albeit at the expense of some hardiness and mud traction.

Don’t get BFG,from my experience the “quieter” KO2 is just as bad as the old KO.[bigsad]
A lot of the Jap brigade are running Toyo these days, but they may not come in the size you are after.

The Mickey Thompson ATZ P3's on my D2a are a bit noisy But that is an easy fix, I simply wind the windows up[biggrin][thumbsupbig]
I have found that usually the quieter the tyre the less use they are off road So I am quite happy to put up with a bit of road noise in a 4WD because that's what I use them for.[thumbsupbig]

I've 3 different brands on at the moment so I don't know which brand is the noisiest, the Cooper Discovery ST Maxx appears to be noisier.
funny it is purported to have some sort of sidewall armour, but it is not black and when scrubbed when washing the car, still doesn't look black like the others...interesting.
the others are Falken and Bridgestone

Well given the pricing I’m seeing is over $100 a tyre more than the Maxxis, and they sound like they’re similar on the road noise front (similar bold tread pattern so not surprising), I think I’ll stick with the Maxxis LT. I briefly did toy with switching to the Duratrac.

On a similar vein, has anyone tried the Hankook Dynapro Atm Rf10 tyre 255/55R19?
They seem very reasonably priced and may be a good all round tyre?

Bytemrk ran them happily for quite a while. They can be a little soft in the sidewall so care needs to be taken.

I’m running these Hankooks.
Mostly highway work, occasional towing and mild off road, not much road noise, good wear.
Agree might be a bit of bulge in the sidewall, but adjust pressures accordingly.
Good value IMO.
Would probably buy again.

Personally I have found the BFG KO2 really good. Quiet with amazing traction around our muddy farm. Won’t be changing for anything else.

Duratracs are a class act. They are a little louder than the less aggressive AT. Duratracs are as close to a full MT as an AT gets. Cheers

I’ve had K02’s. Great tyre but noisy as crap
I’ve also had D697’s - loved them but they got noisy after 50%
@Tombie would the Duratrac’s be less or more noisy than the 697’s

The 19" versions are likely to be quieter than my 17" because they have more blocks and smaller voids for the same diameter making the tread less chunky and being P-rated rather than LT would have a more flexible carcase. I don't know that I'm game enough to try them in 255/55R20 on my L322 but I'd like a smaller tyre than my current 275/55R20.

I have about 6500km on my 255/55R19 Duratracs, fitted to my 07 L322. They are definitely due for rotation, the noise has increased. If you hate noisy tyres then these ones are probably not for you.
A friend has just had a set of 255/55R20 fitted to his D4, it will be interesting to see how they go.

More... especially at lower speeds where you can hear/feel the lugs.

My experience with Duratracs noisiness was:
non insufferable, like some others can be. So I'd put up with their noise levels.
Caveat tho, was that this was on a D1(YoungAngus's Tdi).
I've now had experience with 4 sets of tyres 'directly'.
Duratracs sounded quieter than KO2s, but again the caveat is that the Goodyears on a D1 Tdi, KO2s on a D2 TD5. D2 has much better sound insulation all round.
I'd bet they're close enough to the same(directly speaking) than someone who may have gone from a set of one to another.
At this same time I had Yokohama Geolander G012s on my D1 Tdi, and they were more worn than the Goodyears and the KO2s, and due to this extra wear may have sounded similarly loud.
I do remember when I got my D1 the Yokos and were new they didn't seem as loud compared to when I had the chance to experience the Duratracs.
G012 tread pattern was far more road oriented than either the Duratracs and the KO2s, so I'd expect quieter.

I had BFG KO on the D2,not that noisey at all.Actually quieter than a worn out set of OEM Michelin XPC's.
Both the KO,and KO2 are drony on the D4,the KO2 appear to be worse.Mostly around 60 to 70km/hr.
And a mate has KO2 on a LC200 Sahara, they can hardly be heard at all.
Apparently the more refined a vehicle, the noisier the tyres appear.

I've had ko2s , duratracs and bridgestone at's on a 200 series 285/65/18 the bridgestones were the quietest ,but the worst out of the three, and the cheapest, the ko2s were quieter than the duratracs for sure, but as said the duratrac are a class act especially on gravel, yes they throw more rocks on the gravel and hum more on the tar but you can't have it all ,thats not saying that ko2's are a bad tire they are great all round tire, nearly the same klms 8000 less out of the dura's but id take the duras over the ko2's, just my opinion.

Just to throw a curve ball to the KO2 aspects of this discussion. I've been running some Wellington Highlander ATs for the last 16 months. Usage has been roughly one third on the bitumen and the other two thirds on bush tracks.
Yes, they are a Chines copy of the KO2.
They have been a total surprise to me. No complaints at all. A bit of a not over the top intrusive hum on the bitumen but in the bush....totally competent, just point and drive. Importantly to me there have been no stone punctures, sticks through sidewalls etc.

Can you clarify though... “Bridgestone AT” isn’t really enough info - which unit?
And don’t fall into the trap of comparing rubber between vehicles. I’ve had vehicles where certain tyres are a complete disaster and other brands/models work better with them.

Hi there Tombie
Correct me if I'm wrong on the number but i think from memory 697 LT'S rings loudly, i ran them on my hilux as well different size of course , with the same results could be just a toyota thing [wink11] also ran the ko2 on the hilux and had a older set of goodyear wrangler MT'S they were great too. But Bridgestone when it comes to issues with tires were top notch i ran a road tire called ecopia or something like that, they bubbled two side walls , and they replaced all four tires. The 697s if thats correct ,wore the worst, they were the worst in the wet and the worst on the gravel on both cars ,rotated at service 10000klms on each car ,saying that where we live is very hard on tires regardless what they are. but they were the quietest. Totally agree on different cars work better on one tyre to another. my opinion is just based on what I've tried on our road, on those two vehicles they could be great on a amarok or a great wall.
Cheers

I work in an environment where I was averaging 2-5 punctures a week.
It really does come down to driving style, location, speed, nature of the terrain.
Those wanting offroad performance will have to sacrifice something else (usually noise) if they are only running a single set of rubber.

Considered a set Duratracs for my D5 in 275 55 20.
On advice from tyre mob (Bob Jane) ended up fitting Nitto Ridge Grapplers which i am very happy with.
Good on road both wet & dry, good on gravel & good off road done about 6000 km on them.

I've had Maxxis 980 LT 19" on for around 45K now and the noise level gets less as they wear. Maybe another 10K on them. Very undecided about what tyre or rim size to go for next. Tuffant 18" are on my mind at the mo but what rubber??
Decisions decisions.

AlanTH.Alan a mate of mine had that tyre on his late D3. It was a good tough tyre at Cape York. I do like Maxxis having run the Bravos on 2 different Land Rovers. The Dura has another 4mm or so depth from standard when new over the Maxxis in my size tyre.

In the R19 size the Maxxis has 1/32” more depth than the Duratrac. 13/32” vs 12/32” or around 0.8mm, so insignificant factor here. Duratrac seem to be $400-450 in this size whereas $330 for a Maxxis last purchase. Not insignificant if you’re going to buy a complete set. [emoji2369] I still haven’t decided.

Maxxis used to be even cheaper when I started using them (ie in comparison to other, better known, makes). But they are still good value and especially if in the size you are looking at the tread depth is the same.

I did have some probs. with the Maxxis though. One had a different make date than the other 4 when I bought a complete set. I did query it and got told it made no difference.
However it was the one which had the most punctures when doing an off road trip and the repairers reckoned it had air coming out through the tread in numerous places.
I complained to Maxxis and claimed a replacement under their "warranty" only to find out that it didn't cover off road tyres off road. :O
In the end I got a replacement for a 100 bucks but am a bit wary of having them if I get 18" rims which is on the cards. Having said that I was quite happy with their Bravos on a Prado I had years ago.
If I keep the 19" rims I may go for the General Grabbers I've had on Defenders and they've been good.

Just snagged myself a set of (5) Compomotives in gunmetal grey, mint condition, with (4) near new 285/60R18 Cooper Zeon’s - all told $1,500!
Pretty pleased. Might sell the tyres (pretty popular on Landcruisers I hear) and get something a little narrower that doesn’t rub on full-lock
