I'm looking at a DII V8 that has a low brake pedal, which you can 'pump up'. The pedal isn't to the floor at its lowest brake application, and they stop well, but the travel varies.

Has anyone heard of this being a common problem with 99 models?

Sounds like it could be the master brake cyclinder.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but I did a google on it and it appears a few forums have mentioned the fact that the calipers are a poor design until 2003, and that it has an effect on pedal travel. Makes no sense to me, I think it's maybe air in the system. What I'm worried about is if it's the ABS unit, which I've heard is $6k to replace.

Car also has slightly noisy lifters and sone transmission whine at lower speeds (auto not transfer whine) so I'm wondering if I should walk away. Not so familliar with D2s, have been looking at D1s.

If the car is in Sydney get it looked over by Graeme Cooper phone: 95502689, ask for Ward. They are fantastic better than the main dealer's in my opion.

Hi 4X4V8
I think its fairly standard, mine could be described as soft with a bit of travel but as Pedro states they work exceptionally well.
See if you can drive another Disco2 to make the comparison,Im sure if there is somebody here with 1 nearby they would help out.

a combination of worn pads and low fluidwill also cause this.
air in the system is another thought.
don't get the NRMA to look at it, go with coopers or davis performance landys. it will be money well spent in the long run

I think its common to all ABS fitted Disco's. The Rave disc shows some reservoirs (dampers), fitted in the braking circuit. (item 6). The initial brake pedal travel overcomes these and then the pedal goes firm.

Barney - How can worn pads cause a soft or low pedal?

If you have air in the system as stated before, that could be causing you this grief.

The only true way to bleed a DII is to have it power bled. This involves using the testbook to force the ABS modulator pump to pump through the fluid.

I had to do this after fitting a new ABS modulator.

As far as modulator price goes yes 6K is what the stealer will charge, but you would be very foolish to want to pay that kind of money. You can buy second hand or I beleive get the modulator repaired for a heck of a lot less than that.

If you modulator is faulty you would most likely be getting ABS warning lights on your dash, so I doubt that is your problem

Silly question but have you checked for play in the wheel bearings?
