Puma Fuel Line Connectors

Hi,

I am installing the Diesel Care secondary filter under the car and am having some trouble getting the fuel line to re-connect. It was painful to get apart, and I have now got the blue button moving in and out a lot more freely, but no matter what i try i cannot seem to get it to reconnect. I can sort of get it in and it wont pull out, but if I jiggle it from side to side it just comes straight out so not really something i can leave.

The connector (male) into the secondary filter (female) click in ok, it is the new connector (male) going into the existing connector (female) that will just not go.

I have tried a little wd40 on the male connector , but it just never seems to go in that last little bit.

Is there any trick that may help me get it in, or alternatively does any one the original fuel line size and i will just cut it off and put in a brass connector?

From memory they're just very difficult buggers.
Muscle is what worked for me ultimately. Might take jiggling the blue tab while forcing them in...

I don't know how much harder I can push.

The front rib gets past the blue tab, just it never seems to go all the way home into the connector by an amount I would probably struggle to measure.

Richard... I would be comparing the non-factory male fitting with the factory one. Check the diameters are the same, check the position of the lip is the same on both. If they are both the same then try inserting the factory one again to see if that connects as per-normal, if not then there maybe something wrong with the female fitting...

The fitting sizes are 3/8 on the feed to the engine and a 5/16 on the return from memory. The oneup in the engine bay (that contains the valve) is different again - It's 12mm. This is where I tapped into as it was the easiest to access and I found a spot in the engine bay to mount the filter. To date, its been working a treat... I did post up some photos some time ago I think...

I will need to try and get the one of the feed side apart again, I put it together then went to pull it apart again and it wouldn't release it.

I have gone and bought a 3/8 <-> 3/8 barb fitting, so I might just remove the connectors if all becomes too hard. At least I can look at it on the bench and replace it later it I want to.

I already had the kit when you got yours, otherwise I would have got you to get me one as well.

Back under the car again, I think I have spent about 4 hours now on this one connector.

This is the tool to remove them. About 20 bucks from your favourite auto shop.

In my dealings with them, the first time I made a mess of it, and it was able to re-seat.
This tool disengages the press fitting teeth from within then allows it to slide off.

Hopefully you haven't buggered it up too much.

The blue teeth inside look ok, the outside of the connector has some marks now, but only minor scratches.

The problem pulling it apart was I think it was full of muck, as I have cleaned it out and I can now operate the button easily.

Mechanic said the o can swell inside, so just use a bit of lubrication of some kind which hasn't done anything for me, when I push it in I can feel the blue button going in but I cannot get it to go that last little bit to lock, and I have used every bit of strength I have on it (I usually break things without trying) so I would normally not put everything into it.

Thanks, good to know which tool to use next time, as I bought a different one, but seems to get the button moving.

I'm not familiar with the Puma fuel connectors but if they've got 'O' rings, make sure there is not an old 'O' ring still in there preventing the new one from seating correctly.

It pays to remember that car companies have been reducing costs for years and if they arent imrpoving quality if they dont have to. These fittings will be very cheap and will probably damage easily.
Have you priced a new fitting ?
Or just alter it to the old hose clamp system

Ok, Just to let people know

There is no O ring in the way, i found a similar connector as provided in the kit online about $10 which is on the way, and I did buy a brass connector from the local Marine shop for $5.

I did contact Diesel Care and they said that some of the kits had a short fitting and that the long fitting is required, which i assume is where the locking rim is on the connector. They are sending me one in the mail, so when it turns up I will try it and post back the results.

Just to let anyone know who get one of the secondary filter kits from Diesel Care, the kit they provided had the wrong connector in it and no amount of force would have made it fit. They were very quick to respond to fix the issue as they replied to my email first thing the next business day and had the replacement part posted out to me within 4 days.

just in case anyone else ends up with this issue, the top one in this picture is the new one and the locking ring is just slightly forward of the ring on the old one. I tested the new one, and it click and locks in without any force, and is easily removed now the connector is cleaned.

Sorry Rob,

I didn't measure it before I fitted it, both seem to fit into the female connector which is probably just the rubber o ring. I just couldn't get it to lock as the locking ring is the width of the ring further back.

I ordered a new male/female connector from fleabay so I will see if they are the same when they show up and can measure it for you if they are.
