View Full Version : What D4 to go for?

Thinking of buying a used D4 and see there are two engines to choose from, the TDV6 and SDV6. Looking at the auto videos on you tube all I saw was the TDV6, any particular reason for that?

Just to confuse you.

D4 has come with 3 ‘T’urbo ’D’iesel ‘V’ 6 engines:

TDV6 2.7 single turbo - Ended 2012

TDV6 3.0 Twin Turbo

SDV6 3.0 Twin Turbo

Thanks for that, just wondering if there are any major differences between them making the TDV6 a better bet offroad, the extra power and torque on the SDV6 is tempting though

When I bought my TDV6 5 seater base model in 2015 there was about $15k price upgrade to the lowest spec SDV6. The price was taken up with a bunch of added features that I didn't want so I got mine re-tuned and now I have the same performance as the SDV6 without the fruit.

There are a good few threads on this, some pretty recent.

Have a look through the D3/4 section, and you should find them.

The TD is an identical motor just detuned slightly but still packs a wallop. Get it chipped if need be. Make a list of the features you want as nearly no to are alike. Colour, diff lock, HSE memory seats etc etc. honestly the engine would be way the down list. More importantly the 8 speed of the 2014 is worth more consideration and low klm’s. Or if cheaper wheel options are your thing perhaps the 2.7, but finding a good low k example my be harder but not impossible.

The 2.7,when tuned has similar outputs to a stock TDV6,but they all had the 6 speed, similar to SDV6 of same years. The TDV6 came only with 8 speed, from MY13,as did the SDV6.TDV6 replaced 2.7TD.

The 2.7 is generally less problematic than the 3.0L,but they are getting on a bit now,and as someone has said,a good low K one maybe difficult to find, there were not a lot sold.

When i bought mine an SDV6 was about $12K more,i couldn't justify the extra cost, 2.7 vehicles are usually cheaper second hand.

And let’s not forget the TDV6 3.0 can come in a high output as well as a ‘low’ output variety, depending on year model...
Confused yet?

Yes veebs, Tombie was incomplete. Is that an error???[emoji50]

Yes the TDV6 3.0L that was sold early on alongside the 2.7L is a full power equivalent of the later SDV6 engine 180KW 600Nm config. That’s my baby

Plus the petrol versions are worth a look eg 250kw V6 3L supercharged is a great engine with the 8 speed auto. Often overlooked but IMHO the best D4 by a country mile...and fewer engine issues too..no weird belts to worry about replacing or bi turbo or egr issues either.

Fuel efficiency is not the only metric to consider when buying a D4.. although atm petrol is waaay cheaper than diesel🙄

But...try finding a SCV6 at a reasonable price...took us a year to get one in Tassie..and I'm pretty sure it was the only one here too 😞

The D4 also came with the 5.0 naturally aspirated V8 petrol motor, but only with the 6 speed as far as I know. The V8 D4 had all the fruit.

INTer is correct about the D4 SCV6 being uncommon. I had never heard of one before his purchase.

The RRS L494 is another option if big cargo space is not required, with a range of engine options, all with the 8 speed.

Then there’s the RRS L320 or L322 (2006 onward) options, if you like the fruit without the big price tag.

How uncommon?

Well when I trailered it to the Southern LR dealer cause the gear selector froze..the service manager asked me how I'd put a Jag motor in it.

He knew the engine from the Jags in the service workshop but that's all he knew😞

So far as i know about 200 were sold in total..so there are some out there..just need to ask😃

Mmm HSE that's the one I really wanted but prices were waay too high..40 ish k vs 70k plus for the HSE at the time. Luckily mine was optioned up to the max..so almost a HSE spec wise.

Not wrong, too high a price for a 6yo car, it has dropped 2k in the past month, but needs to be around 40ish to get interesting.
