AStPW!!
His recent vid lambasting the recent journo releases about the new defender has to be a great laugh!
I hate to admit, I do like his channel, but only for the travel content.
Any of the tech videos he releases, I generally ignore.
But his recent vid re the Defender release has him reminiscing of his younger days when the D2 was released and he was part of the in crowd back then.
I won't explain his gaff about the D2's inner workings, but the hint is at about the 13min mark he goes on a bit about how well he knows the D2.
Don't have to watch the whole vid, just a min or two from about the 12:30 mark and listen to what he says on the specs of the D2.
A bit further along he then compares driving the D1 vs the D2 to show us all the differences between the two.
The humourous part tho is his self assessment that "he knows how to drive off road" [bighmmm]
His arrogance is amazing!
I think the (SA) LR person was right in that he needs a bit of re-edumacation.
I'd be curious if anyone else notices what he's done wrong/differently.

Good to know though that the D2 auto has a viscous centre diff. Makes it so much better than the manual [emoji1787]. This isn't the first time he has said this. We won't mention that the D2 unlocked needs some practice to drive the traction control properly...its not quite point and shoot.

I agree that his videos have some great points, but he should not be let to explain anything more mechanically complex than a folding chair.

If you had the strength of mind to watch further(I didn't), he then follows up with a comparison drive between D1 and D2 at a place where he had trouble with the D2(and it's lack of CDL) and 'shows' how the D1 made it through but the D2 doesn't.
What the idiot doesn't realise is 1/. he takes a different line with the D1, giving it more grip on the front spinning wheel(hence it doesn't get stuck) and 2/. he used so much more momentum in the D1 that it didn't have a chance to get caught with the front wheel in the air for a fraction of the time the D2 did.
Here's the link to the vid: YouTube (https://youtu.be/r5GROOU5OpE)
The first 12 minutes just sound like whining, with a twist of sour grapes about how lacking in knowledge all other journos are. At about the 13min mark he claims that the auto version of the D2 uses a viscous locking transfer case, that the manual version doesn't have!
Then for 2 1/2 minutes comes the painful part about how well he knows how to drive, and how well he knows Landrovers! [bighmmm] And note the three drives over the obstacle course.

I must admit that yesterday I watched a Youtube by him on the various plusses and minusses of Lithium Batteries vs Agm.
I thoought it was excellent.
I have done quite a bit of research on Lithiums and his specialist was pretty on the money AFAIK.
The only new thing I learned was that it is best to look for a Prismatic Lithium battery, rather than one with heaps of those 18260 ( or whatever they are called ) as the specialist claimed the small battery jobs can have solder joints fail on rough roads.
hasn't hurt Tesla much though with their small battery daisy chains. But then they do not go on corrugations.

Prismatic cells suffer from poorer thermal management and die quicker.
They are also very sensitive to deformation under pressure and cost more per watt.
Their common use is in packaging situations where space is premium - like a mobile or laptop.
Again, a case of this guy (StPoop) talking out his wazoo.

Hi Phillip, his lithium video was a total waste of time.
His “expert”, at one point, had to go and look up what he was talking about.
If any one wants to be fair dinkum about any form of battery comparison, they first need to know about the different battery types being compared.
These two clown know little about either battery type and were just parroting the usual advertising B/S used by shonky lithium battery sellers.

Just do one truthfully and accurately. [emoji41]
And if you don’t know something be forthright in admitting that.
StPoop did one on an ARB TPMS and complained constantly the unit was faulty. The reality was he had no idea how to operate it, had installed it upside down even!
Slagged it as being malfunctioning when he hadn’t even set it up.
Sadly he has a strong following of people who wouldn’t realise that he has no idea what he’s talking about.

Look , The video made many good points that are pretty well unarguable.
I will quote a few.
1 Use only a DC DC charger with a Lithium setting, and its surprising how few there are about at a reasonable cost.
2 Do not put a Lithium under bonnet as the Lithium becomes more reactive and the battery life shortens dramatically. I read an experimental report last week where the experimenters stored charged Lithium batteries at different temperatures and a 50C the test battery failed in 90 days.
If I were to put one underbonnet as I plan to I will fan cool it and it will be in the original tray.
3 The BMS in cheaper Lithiums are inadequate to run high current items such a inverters. As long as people with 200AH banks understand that they cannot reliably run a 2000watt Inverter something has been achieved.
4 And I sort of learned this as it was already somewhere in the back of my mind . If the Lithium is completely dead the DC DC charger will not recognize it and the DC DC charger can be reactivated by placing a 9volt battery across the Lithium terminals. This also applies to AGMs but if an AGM is that dead the odds are it is toast.
There are probably a few other items that those who are not electrically minded would not know. The issue is that there was no misinformation in the video.
Now I have fitted a smaller 34AH Lithium to my Camper trailer using a 10amp DC DC charger which isolates the Lithium from the car system .
So Don't be too hard on the technical bloke who had forgotten the word "prismatic" . Also I don't see that this is a negative. The best solar battery cells are prismatic.

....
And this is the point!
Be truthful first and foremost, and accurate to the best of your knowledge.
When an inaccuracy is highlighted, then at least have the respect(ie truthfulness) to admit it wasn't as accurate as it could otherwise have been.
That's why I posted this thread. I highlighted StPoops . .. oops! I mean AStPW's error, and instead of researching it, he got defensive and his reply was for me to know my facts! [bighmmm]

Same. QLDers are cane toads.
What does 'Cane toad' mean in Australia?
Australian slang 'Cane toad' meaning?
A person from Queensland (https://outbackdictionary.com/queensland/), named after the influx of the massive amounts of cane toads (animals) that have shown up in Queensland (https://outbackdictionary.com/queensland/) recently.
Canetoad (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php'term=Canetoad)
An Australianism (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php'term=Australianism) or Aussieism (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php'term=Aussieism) for someone that resides or is born in Queensland.
Comes originally from a football war between two Australian States, Queensland and New South Wales (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php'term=New%20South%20Wales).
People from New South Wales are also referred to as Cockroaches, also because of the football war.
The Canetoads are gonna kick the Cockroaches (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php'term=Cockroaches) ass this State of Origin (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php'term=State%20of%20Origin) match (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php'term=match).

Ah the memories of mowing under the fence and splattering 4 cane toads everywhere. Then taking off the grass catcher and touching my lips which went numb for several hours.
The poor old chooks used to peck them in their water trough and they would then die of a paralyzed throat.
After a storm in Brissy they would be all over the road and you would swerve to pop as many as you could.
Now you are not supposed to use them as cricket or golf balls but put them in the freezer to be "humane"
As if I feel any sympathy to a bloody cane toad.

I'm sympathetic towards them , I sanitise them with dettol before I humanely freeze them , I mean I don't want any infections in my freezer , but they take off like a rocket and I don't seem to be able to catch them to freeze them.

Once they are sprayed, they hop about a metre and then freeze where they land.

have you seen a cockroach nest.....**** everywhere.
let's bring another ****ty little pest in......that stinkin little pink lizard , which I will not call a gecko.
they seem to breed in our ceiling and **** down through the gaps between our cornices and our rough faced bricks.
they do not like mothballs so I throw mothballs around the ceiling spaces but that doesn't stop the little bastards from breeding elsewhere and ****ting all over our outside furniture.
now, can someone tell me , is there also a nice humane way , similar to the humane way I treat the cane toads, that can help me eliminate the little bastards?

We have the native fat tail ones down here and they **** everywhere also but their nativeness? means that I love em.

have you seen a cockroach nest.....**** everywhere.
let's bring another ****ty little pest in......that stinkin little pink lizard , which I will not call a gecko.
they seem to breed in our ceiling and **** down through the gaps between our cornices and our rough faced bricks.
they do not like mothballs so I throw mothballs around the ceiling spaces but that doesn't stop the little bastards from breeding elsewhere and ****ting all over our outside furniture.
now, can someone tell me , is there also a nice humane way , similar to the humane way I treat the cane toads, that can help me eliminate the little bastards?
Yup. Baygon, Raid etc.

Not as bad as Thailand, but not far off.
If i can manage to catch one, it gets thrown outside for the Butcherbirds, they like them.

Mate - love it here. Moved here 15 years ago after coming up here for work trips.
No Red dust issues for over 10 years
150m to the beach from my house
Ocean views
Great fishing
Flinders Ranges 45 min away
Great offroad driving 5 min away
Day trips to Gawler Ranges, Flinders, Lincoln, Coffin Bay, West Coast SA.
Only bit that sucks - no Bunnings within 2.5 hours. (So that’s a good day trip too)

Hello All,
Over the weekend I was talking to a 20 something year old male about towing capacity, motor vehicles and car trailers. He insisted he had towed his mates GU Patrol with his Toyota Hilux from the Gold Coast to Bundaberg. This task was accomplished just by using a standard U-Haul trailer. According to them a GU Nissan Patrol weighs in at 4 tonnes by the way!
I asked him to repeat the weight - yes I heard correcly the first time. A GU Nissan Patrol comes in at a weight of 4 tonnes. I was treated like a right dill by asking him to repeat it.
Funny how the International 1973 D-Series 1210 Four wheel drive van I had weighed on a weighbridge only weighs in at 2.56 tonnes. It was so hard not to shake my head when I walked away. But I knew better to point out the comparative weights between a GU Patrol and a D-Series Inter and the difference in size, capacity (GVM) and yes, TARE weight.
Kind regards
Lionel

I was asked if using Baygon was humane.

It was spectacular :)
Many, many, many years ago we took a couple of weather balloons and some Acetylene tanks to Silver Sands beach.
Dug a big hole, inflated the balloon with acetylene and places in hole.

Used to make my own bangers with black powder. Feed them lit to the cane toad who will eat anything placed in front of it. They then hop off and expand like a toad fish but are tough enough contain the explosion so no mess. Gather up and dispose of dead toads. Not economic but young enough at the time to be amused. As they died instantly was considered to be human.

We used Dieldren(spelling) on them in my day.Couple of spoonfuls down the nest, and they would never be seen again. It was deadly stuff.Green ant nests got the same treatment.Small nests a teaspoon of the poison was all that was needed.
The old man had a 5 gallon drum of the stuff. As we now know, not a nice poison at all.
As for Toads,we did al sorts of things to them.Air rifles, golf clubs, fire crackers, metho, etc, etc.

I'd live in Whyalla , but swmbo wouldn't.
I'd live in any of the SA coastal towns backlit by the Flinders Ranges.
And then there's the SA deserts , which I love and have many friends living and working there on cattle stations.
Thats why I travel into those areas a couple of times each year.

People who know it all!
My, relatively new, assistant manager is a bit like that.
He is very good at telling me how good he is.
He is also very good at telling others they are wrong, that they should think/believe what he thinks/believes & he also likes to tell everyone what he has done & where he has been.
No matter what some has done he has done it bigger & better. No matter where someone has been he has been there & it was better when he was there.
He is also just a little condescending to most people.
Basically an obnoxious, opinionated person who is not very good at his job.
One of the main reasons I have an assistant manger is so I can take time off, during the 2 longer breaks I have had (4.5 weeks & 1.5 weeks) he has called me constantly & 1 time called my Boss to get me back here.
But he is really good at his job, knows it all plus some & has lots of opinions on how to fix all the worlds problems. Pity he can't fix some Roadhouse problems.
Anyway, I consider myself very lucky to have him since anything I am in anyway unsure of he will have the answer, in fact, even if I am sure & have done it a thousand times before he will tell me how to do it.
Just as well I'm a **** listener!

Look , The video made many good points that are pretty well unarguable.
I will quote a few.
1 Use only a DC DC charger with a Lithium setting, and its surprising how few there are about at a reasonable cost.
While it is recommended to use a a DC/DC charger with lithium charge algorithms, but you actually do not need a DC/DC charger with lithium settings to charge lithium batteries if you are just charging from an alternator ( via a DC/DC charger ). Because no one drives long enough to get the benefits of a lithium dedicated charger so no loss or harm done.
While the fan “might” keep the battery cooler while the motor is running, but unless you run the fan for a considerable time after the motor is turned off, the heat coming off the motor after it is turned off and no longer has air flowing pasted the motor, this heat will still cook a lithium battery.
3 The BMS in cheaper Lithiums are inadequate to run high current items such a inverters. As long as people with 200AH banks understand that they cannot reliably run a 2000watt Inverter something has been achieved.
Agree on this point but the battery they were using was not that great in the first place. A single one of my AMPS brand 100Ah Lithium batteries will power a 2000w inverter.
4 And I sort of learned this as it was already somewhere in the back of my mind . If the Lithium is completely dead the DC DC charger will not recognize it and the DC DC charger can be reactivated by placing a 9volt battery across the Lithium terminals.
This is not correct, as the clown himself found out. Most DC/DC charger will reactivate the BMS in a lithium battery that has shut down because the battery was fully discharged.
It is 230vac battery chargers that will not reactivate the BMS in a lithium battery that has shut down because the battery was fully discharged. If the battery charger is a good quality one, then all you need to do is set the battery charger to POWER SUPPLY mode and this will reactivate the BMS.
Once the BMS is back on, switch the battery charger back to BATTERY CHARGE mode and let it do its job.
There are probably a few other items that those who are not electrically minded would not know. The issue is that there was no misinformation in the video.
The video contained misinformation and a total lack of any useful information.
Information like what to look for when trying to get a good quality lithium battery. Or how to test a lithium battery to see if you actually got what you paid for.
Once again, that video is a total waste of time.

Drivesafe I respect your experience and admire your ability to promote your business.
However in my experience the majority of people do not want a "superior" Lithium battery for maybe over $1000 but one that will do the job they want for much less.
The report by the subject of this video was about the cheaper end of the Lithium market ie the volume end that most people look at and the end that causes most angst when the batteries do not perform to often unrealistic expectations.
One very prominent ebay seller has obviously been barred from ebay recently due to misrepresentation of the capacity of his batteries . I suspect he is back using another name..
In my case I want a Lithium battery to run my fridge for as long as possible at the lowest cost and am not interested in running a 2000watt inverter.
So I am looking at the lowest priced Lithium battery that meets its specs . I do not have room except for under the bonnet, and I intend to use a temperature tracker to ascertain what temperature the stock battery box gets to. I think there would be many on this forum with similar requirements .
I am more concerned about the starting battery which is next to the turbo but my blue top seems to be coping well after 2.75 years at still 700+ CCA.

nformation like what to look for when trying to get a good quality lithium battery. Or how to test a lithium battery to see if you actually got what you paid for.

Well we would all love that. At present all we can rely on is word of mouth. There have been tests of Renology in the USA which show that they meet spec.
A friend of mine bought some cheapies from the Ebay seller and found them to be junk. He got a refund .Ebay rated the seller as 100% even though it was junk so that is no indication. However they have now taken him off.
He is now happy with his latest purchase but I haven't found out the brand.
I couldn't find AMPS brand on Google. Could you advise pricing and specs to the forum?

In this case you’ve provided perfect evidence of the stubbornness of wanting “new tech” when the tech is completely unsuited to your needs, wants or application.
If it’s going under bonnet - it’s AGM for you.
The fan running will reduce capacity / benefits
It will heat soak
Cheaper cells don’t last
DCDC will add a cost you don’t need
A decent AGM will weight a bit, partially offset by not needing a fan/bracket/dcdc etc.
You’ll be able to replace an AGM 3-5 times before you come close to cost.

Where is your spirit of adventure? If you don't try new things you will never have new experiences.
I already have fitted a Lithium 34AH to my camper trailer run through a 10amp DC DC charger in the back of the car to run the lights and water pump. The fridge is in the car.
I have not had such a terrific run with AGM batteries as house batteries including Optima Yellow where the bloody thing leaked through the negative terminal after a couple of years in my RRC. Similarly a Supercharge dropped a cell after a couple of years. I cannot recall what happened to my latest AGM as I think I changed it as a precaution before my latest round OZ trip.
I fitted a wet battery 100AH Century 2.75 years ago and it is still going strong . This was as a stopgap until I could afford a Lithium or fit another AGM, hoping that by now the Lithium battery price would drop from the over $1000 that it was then. HA Ha all the scholars who said that they would halve in price are somewhat wrong.( for the same quality)
But something I didn't realise with a wet battery is that the charge rate drops to almost nothing after say 80%. This meant that my 8-9 amp solar panel was only putting say 1.5-2amps into the battery unless the fridge cuts in when it would go up to 5 or so. This meant that it did not get quite to 100% on the second day. It is satisfactory at the moment but I want to see what is possible.
I do lots of things that others do not try, like fitting a Thor manifold on a 14CUX for example or fitting a second alternator to a 91 RRC or fitting the only Provent clone that fits in a D2 when you have a second battery (which works very well thank you) , or switching the starting battery to the second position and placing the house battery in the original position. Or maybe fitting a CDL with the transfer case in Situ.
Some may not work but most do.
I do not think that the original battery position gets too hot as it is on the "cold " side of the engine and already has ventilation behind the headlight but I will place a data logger there to see.
If too hot I may fit a fan and maybe a time delay relay to the fan. In addition be aware that the failure of the test Lithium was at a Constant 50C and fully charged. My usage of the car certainly will not be constant and I doubt I have 10 years to live anyway .
My most immediate little project is to see whether putting an extra hole in the filter housing base with an input behind the headlight will do anything for top end performance , seeing the UK map makers insist no snorkel on highly tuned TD5. maybe so maybe not but lets see. I have bought a housing from a forum member and await its arrival.
Be adventurous . My little projects keep my mind active.

Hi again Phillip and mate, be adventurous, but please don’t use that clown’s “expert advice” as any sort of guidance for what you are planning.
Also, not sure why your lead acid battery only charged to 80% but is more likely a problem with your original setup.
Even if this was the case, you will quickly discover that if your lead acid battery was low when you started your drive to recharge it, that it would have reached that 80% charged state far quicker than you will get your lithium from a low state to 80%.
Something else to consider as well. Constant VOLTAGE charging ( by an alternator ) of a lead acid battery is a totally different form of charging to the constant CURRENT charging ( DC/DC, Solar and Battery Chargers ), you will be using on your lithium battery.
The constant VOLTAGE charging is why your lead acid battery would reach the 80% ( or higher in most other setups ) far quicker than your lithium can.
The terminal voltage on your lithium battery will remain low until roughly the final 10 or so percentage of the charge cycle.

I didn't say that.
My LA battery is fully charged on day 1.
I usually pretty quickly place it on a solar panel.
Over the day it will remain pretty well charged and overnight drop down because of my old Engel fridge load.
The next morning it starts at say 12.2 then the solar panel quickly rises to 14.4 Volts, then drops charge to 1-2 amps and 13.4 volts.
This is less than the fridge demand so every time the fridge activates it goes back up to 14.4 volts and say 5 amps.
But this drops off at about 4PM so the fridge overnight draw draws it down to a bit below say 12 volts or 11.9.
And so on.
I appreciate an AGM would probably fully charge quicker and as I explained the LA was a cheap interim solution.
My setup is quite good with a supposedly 250 watt panel,( 1m by 1.1m) which seems to actually be about 150 watt and a GSL 12 amp MPPT controller which won a design award .Peak seen is about 8.5 -9 amps through a in line amp meter , but I don't let the battery get down too low so the achievable peak current may be actually more.
Up until now I have used a ABR controller which decouples at 12.4 volts but I have now replaced this with just an ignition controlled solenoid. There may have been some interaction between the Optima Blue top and the LA battery when charging which caused the LA to not fully charge as the AGM Optima is usually still connected when I attach the solar panel. This may have been the problem.
I have not had time to test my revised setup yet because of home isolation.
Both batteries are in good condition with the LA reading about 97AH and the Optima about 740CCA.

Hi Bob, and first off, I personally, would never use a lithium battery as a cranking battery.
Going on info coming out of Europe, there is a huge potential to frying your vehicles electronics, if the lithium battery’s BMS shuts down for any reason while the motor is running.
This is not something that can happen with a lead acid battery, even one that is stuffed.
Second, you need to do a search of that specific brand of products because they are renowned for falsifying specs for their products.
But it’s your call.

Hi Phillip and it sounds like a problem with your solar controller, where it is going into FLOAT mode too soon in the charge cycle.
If your battery was still drawing 1-2 amps in FLOAT mode, it would still have been drawing maximum solar amps if the regulator stayed in CHARGE mode.
Furthermore, if the solar regulator has user settings, then it should be set to 14.7v for maximum charge capability for a lead acid battery ( wet cell or AGM ).

Thanks mate I will check that out.
There is no adjustemnt on the GSL.
As I foolishly believed the panel was 250watts I bought a cheapo MPPT on ebay with a 15 amp capacity.
However it put out 1 amp less than the GSL under the same conditions..

Be adventurous... ok... [emoji41]
First Thor manifold onto a 3.9, with a stroker kit, with a Supercharger, running Haltech Sequential EFI. Already did that [emoji41]
Multi battery configurations - yep, done that too.
Using newer tech for the sake of it is not being adventurous. Especially when the newer tech isn’t suitable to application. A strong discussion can be had using lighting as a topic.
Guess what we just went and did on our Heavy Haul fleet that runs 24/7 on our site?! Wired in heavy bypass looms and removed the LED lighting and went with Xenon Filament lighting.
Our drivers were suffering eye strain against the low contrast environment and several animal strikes were common per shift.
We’ve now pulled the low CRI lighting out, gone Xenon Filament and now - no eye strain, less animal strikes as the drivers say they can see them easier.
Newer isn’t always the correct solution.

I'm sticking with AGM for now for Fridge, camp power etc. I have a 5 year old Full River that just keeps on trucking. When you have nearly a tonn of carrying capacity you don't have to go the lightest necessarily even though I try to keep weight down.
I like the lights on the Triton. Very well sorted LED. The D2 bulbs are kinder and so are well set us Xenons but for sheer grunt I love the LED high and low beams. I have acclimatised to them too.
Cheers
