Just got new boots for the fridge (2016 D4 TDV6)

Falken AT3W’s In LT285/60R18

Issues:
1. minor rub on reverse full lock right. Nothing on left lock and nothing when moving forward. I’ll find the spot, break out the heat gun and make some space in the wheel well liner (minor).
2. Had to remove heat shield from exhaust rear as it prevented the spare from fully seating when raised. I’ll fabricate up something in alum sheet that fits better and allows clearance.
3. Factory hitch receiver interferes with spare. I’ll either move to a Mitch-hitch or (more likely) shave off 5 mm from the back of the receiver. Spare tyre is deflated to fit (yes, I have an under-hood compressor)
4. Speedo is 4kmh pessimistic at 100kmh (ie I’m doing 104 GOS measured with a Speedo speed of 100. Will address with my GAP tool.

Review:
1. Feels great on road at all speeds. I’ve had K02’s (agricultural), D697’s (nice but puncture easy and get noisy after 50%) and Cooper ZEON (crap all round) .. hated them.
2. In sand? Dunno but they’re safe to 8PSI on the Compo’s so should have a great footprint
3. On rocks? Dunno but I’ll find out soon when I give Mundaring powerlines another go
4. In mud? I’ll never find out!

Bit exxy $395/tyre fitted and balanced but currently there’s a 4 for the price of 3 offer which was pretty good. I got 5.

With these bigger tyre combos are people running at a higher ride height setting (ie +30mm) all the time and if so, do you have the wheel alignment performed at that or standard height.

I notice when i raise my car to those heights i have some negative camber on the rears and wouldn't want to prematurely where the tyres if the higher height is the norm for clearance...

Cheers

No but they’re brand new. After 20,000 kms we’ll see. The K02’s drones from new.

I’m guessing that is why you put those Coopers straight back onto Gumtree. Assuming you we’re the person that bought the Compos from Gumtree recently.

Cheers Scott - agree it’s better looking than the D5. I love the way D3’s and 4’s have that “unapologetic” business-like look about them.

But man, I’d kill for a new inline-6 Defender - if they weren’t so bloody expensive!!

Very nice, thanks for the info, interested to see how these go...

I would like to replace my noisy KO2’s which are 265/60/18... They have only done 6000kms and I can’t stand the noise at 60-80km/h, however been extremely happy with the off-road capability... I’m also concerned about their performance on the black stuff in wet conditions..

Shame that Falken don’t make the AT3W 265/60/18 or 265/65/18 sizes in LT construction (according to their website)

The 265/60-18 is an XL and is damn strong compared to other offerings.

I’ve cut one in half and taken a look. You’d be hard pressed to get stronger - backed up by the 114 load rating.

I been thinking the same, but the BFG is a really strong tyre in that size with a much higher load rating.

Mine drone that much at some speeds the dash will buzz on some road surfaces. And yes they have been rotated every 10K,and i have tried different pressures.

I know some think a 114 Load rated tyre is just as strong, but i doubt it.

The BFG is as good as any AT in the mud,but in that black clay we have on the property,it will clog any tyre, and once clogged, its all over.
I have seen numerous other vehicles with all sorts of AT tyres not going anywhere. Some of the contractors that do the wheat have Toyo and BFG Muddies on their Cruisers, they are better, but will still clog completely at times.

I was leaning toward the Perrelli ATplus but $1200 for 4 new 265/60/18s in these is persuasive.

I have Cooper AT3s and the noise is not loud but it’s there.

The Falken in 275/65/18 is 123 load rating. Very Nice. The 285/60 is 118.

Do either of these 2 fit a D4 legally and with no rubbing? If so all good load wise.

Cheers

It will knock it a little. Still a little unsure whether I should go for a bit more. The stock tyre is a near 31 inch 265/60/18. Fuel economy is impressive as is grunt. Not sure if losing a litre or so per 100k (HT to AT is part of that) is worth it. I could just opt for the same size in AT and take a much smaller hit to economy.

Why not 265/65/18.

No added drag from increased width. Still goes 32”.
114T Rating exceeds your GVM and won’t make it ride like a cart.

We are just about to get some 275/55R20s in the Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws and I noticed this thread.
Thanks Tombie for making me check too. I was quoted $380 each tyre (with the 4 tyres for the price of 3 deal in April from Falken) making the full set of 4 being $1140 which I thought was pretty good. Then I checked fleabay and one place is selling the exact same tyre for $285 + $20 postage [bighmmm]. Might have to do some haggling and see what happens.
Glad to see the Falkens perform well though [bigsmile1].

I have 275 55 20 ATW3s, paid $270 a tyre in September last year. The tyres are great, a little whine at highway speeds but excellent grip on wet and dry bitumen. On my one trip off road they worked well. I originally bought them for a trip in October which was limited by rain, then over the Christmas break we had bush fires which prevented my planned excursions and finally Easter was ruined by CV 19. Hopefully I'll be able to get a trip in soon when lockdown ends.

....So after reading a lot of info on the forum, I think my next set of tyres for the D4 will be 265/65-18 (Coming from KO2s in 265/60-18) to add a little extra side wall...

..the decision remains though on what rubber in this choice of 2... being Falken AT3W or Pirelli AT Plus

.. I’m looking at confidence for off-road use but not at the cost of a harsh ride, noise and poor wet weather performance on bitumen where I spend 80% of my time.

There is no tyre that can do it all, but I think the Pirelli and Falken options are getting close to bridging the two requirements.

This has been a very helpful thread!
Cheers Jon

Cheers JonI looked very hard at the AT Plus but the big $$ difference swung me in favour of the Falken's.
I'm a harsh judge of tyres on road, generally I hate new tyres, too much tread squirm in the dry for my liking yet the Falken's have impressed.
They track straight, no tramlining on the D2, grip is very good and wet weather grip is very good with a very predictable transition to either or both ends letting go in the wet and the resultant slide is totally controllable.
There far less TC and ABS action compared to the admittedly worn out Pirelli Verde 255/55's and the prior near new 16" GT Radial HT's.

I put 4 of the Falken 265/60/18 tyres on a D3 6 months ago. Mainly doing Highway so far but no issues. They cost me about $260 each plus fitting and tyre disposal from an online tyre seller. Bought a 5th (spare) about a month ago and cost me under $300 fitted from the local tyre dealer in East Gippsland.

Apparently the 265/60/18 are easy to get as is is a common size on the current Jap 4WD utes.

Took the Disco 4 in for a new set of boots as well (275/55/20s). Only downside is even with the lift rods in, it rubs on full lock in reverse. I haven't had time to investigate just yet, but they look and feel so much more 'tougher' than the old slick Maxxis items that came off the Disco 4.
