Hi All

My Spare wheel winch does not have the 22mm hex head that others refer to in the forums. I have the hook version - see photo.

Has anyone come up with a neat extension that can fit this extension for a set of drawers that I am adding.

Thought of just putting a hook in place but this will rattle a lot - even if I fill it with silicon.

I can’t find the link but there is someone making them out there.

Harry, I think this may sort you out

1/4 Wheel Winder Adapter for Discovery 4 (Late Model) | TuffAnt (https://www.tuffant.com/product-page/discovery-4-late-model-1-4-wheel-winder-adapter)

Thanks John - nothing like a bit of applied KISS. Might try making mine and drill a 22mm socket..

I ground a slot in a socket. I keep it, an extension bar and a ratchet in the drawer. Not as flash as the Tuffant but works fine.

Yes, I have a solution. Works great. Let me try to describe as it's hidden under my drawers.

Get a large 1/2" drive socket. Cut out slots on opposite sides of the socket so the socket fits flush over the "hook" attachment. Not sure what size socket I got but probably about 22mm or so. I then drilled a hole through the socket at right angles to the slots I had put in the socket. Through this drill hole I put a bolt that went through the eye of the hook. Use a bit of loctite on the bolt. This meant the modified socket is attached firmly to the eye of the tyre winch.

I then got a 1/2" to 1/4" reducer that I loctited into the socket. I drilled out a suitable size hole in the rubber bung. The top of the 1/4 drive socket sits pretty much flush with the bung. All you then need is a 1/4" drive extension of suitable length and small 1/4" ratchet to raise and lower tyre. Have to make a hole in the base of the drawers and possibly a way to pull a drawer out to get access to the spare winch.

This is why I went for Drifta drawers. Takes 10 secs to pull drawer fully out and the spare wheel winch socket is just there. I pulled out my 3rd row of seats so heaps of room. If the rear seats are left in you'll need a suitable 1/4" drive extension to go up between the 3rd row seats. Need to pull off the plastic covers of part of the seat to fit the extension through.

If what I'v described sounds useful to you, let me know and I take some pics.

Thanks Briar

Mine will be slightly different as I have removed the back jump seats and installed 2 x 40L water tanks. This means that the floor has been raised by about 90mm above the old folded down seats Level.

I will connect to the hook as you describe but then try use three shortened extensions and two knuckles each at 45deg so that the shaft actually comes straight out the Back - so no need to remove drawers to raise / lower the wheel hopefully.

I say hopefully because this is still all in my head and it makes perfect sense in there 😁

Will post photo’s as I go..

Including a few pics. You have to pull out the rubber grommet around the spare winch winder to be able to get access to put the locking bolt through that goes through the eye.

Rather than using universal joint knuckles to change the angle why not get a flexible 1/4" extension. Would be a lot smoother action.

Mmm neither the knuckles nor the Flexi worked very well - ended up going through 8mm grommets with the straight extension.

So now have 2x40L water tanks onboard at a low CG directly above rear axle. Next will be the drawers & Fridge Slide..
