We stood at the top of the driveway with a lit candle and had a minutes silence, interrupted only by kookies and a couple of passing vehicles. Could only see one other group of neighbours, also with candles.
Then went back to bed and watched the dawn services on TV.
I thought about my uncle, who was an invalid pensioner for the rest of his life after serving in PNG.

Flag raised to half mast, sign "Lest We Forget" on the front gate (but I doubt anyone will see it), and watched the sunrise sitting on the verandah while listening to the dawn service in Canberra.

Still went to the cemetery and spent dawn with the Father in-Law (WW2 Digger). Quite emotional yet strangely peaceful standing graveside alone.

was a good roll up at the end of the driveways in our street which is predominately older folk but there were lots of young kids out as well with handmade poppies and wreaths.
was very nice to see and the sounds of the birds intermingled with the sounds of the RSL app being played from various driveways added to the atmosphere.
and we had a single privately owned warbird fly over the area just after which was a nice touch...
all in all it was well done I thought and a fitting tribute

Just made your own Ian[thumbsupbig]. Listening to the service on ABC with cockatoos in the background on the radio we had a few kookaburra's, magpies and flyby by Flying Foxes. Our dog loved the Driveway services with four Candles for VICPOL and a few extra for my Crew.

We had the Dawn service in our driveway as did quite a few others in the street while watching the sunrise.
It was definetly different but cool with the Kookaburras and Magpies singing as the same time.
Our Daughter and myself decorated our driveway and the Australian flag is hanging from the garage door for today as she is so proud to be giving something back in the way of respect for our ANZACs.

If you watch afl.com.au, or possibly on Channel 7 in some areas, at 1pm today my friend John Mansfield will be shown realising an ambition by playing The Last Post at the MCG, recorded in an empty stadium earlier this week. He is a brilliant bugler so it will be moving.

I didn't hear a thing this morning - I'm told there was quite a cacophony of sounds for ANZAC Day.
I didn't realise it was ANZAC Day until I spoke with a neighbour's partner about the neighbour's photos of him in Afghanistan that are attached to his letterbox. [bigsad]

One other in the street was Justin , an ex navy diver with PTSD.
My Maternal grandfather and uncle served in France in WW1 and got the flu but lived and said uncle then served on HMAS Arunta in WW2.
Dad was old as born in 1899 so served at Wallangarra for over 8 years . His uncle was in NSW Regiment and served in South Africa and China to relieve Beijing.
SWMBO father served at Horn island and died of ulcers. Her mother made ammunition at Rocklea.

I did not know it, but there was a significant Chinese population is Australia in 1914, largely as a result of the goldrushes, and the Commonwealth had not got very far in enforcing the white Australia policy by then. So it is hardly surprising. Thirty years ago one of my coworkers married a Chinese man - she was the first non-Chinese to marry into the family, which had been living in Melbourne since the 1850s.

It is interesting how far back the Chinese influence goes in Australia.
Chinese were trading with people along our northern coast for hundreds of years.
I have a niece who is descended from a long-standing Chinese family, and another relative from China who married a nephew 4 years ago.

I live in the West so my minute of silence is 1.5 hours later than yours, Does that make it less respectful.

I have spent my minute in: Melbourne ( to appease the Yanks ) Australia. Perth. Kanchanburi Thailand. My son has also done it in East Timor and Southern Iraq. My uncle did it in Damascus in 1942, and my other uncle ( radio on a merchant seaman ship ) in the North Atlantic.
ANZAC day means something. I'm surprised a firefighter like you can't understand that. The clock means nothing..

I was on my driveway at 04h00 so I lay down and thought about and prayed for all the servicemen and women, past and present, even the ancient Israelite army whose bones came out of the earth. It seemed very special as I saw 8 satellites and 1 shooting star pass over head in the space of an hour, the most I have ever seen in one viewing, I know it is pro'ly just a coincidence. Then I lit a candle on my letterbox and went inside to watch the dawn service. I didn't like how Ch's 9 & 10 put their logo's in bold on the screen, 7's was much more subdued and the ABC had none.

Historical links between Australia and China is a fascinating topic... If interested, have a read of "1421, the Year China Discovered The World" * by the late Gavin Menzies ... that year, 1,000 junks set sail from China. A number of them got stranded in Australia. The evidence is quite compelling in the light of later DNA population studies and artifacts discovered near Gympie Qld pertaining to 15th century China...

I found it an interesting, and enjoyable piece of fiction. I "sort of" thought there might be something in it - until the author claimed that the Chinese penetrated to the goldfields in the Central West of NSW by sailing up the rivers that go through the Blue Mountains. For anyone with even a tiny bit of knowledge about the are would realise that the rivers are not navigable to any extent into the mountains - and invariably end in cliffs, as the early settlers found. The only route through is to follow the ridges.
If this sort of thing is touted as facts, it throws the whole of the rest of it into doubt, although there is no doubt that the Cinese did do some significant voyaging before they retreated into isoolation in the late fifteenth century.

Getting back on track I was disappointed that NZ's PM Jacinda Ardern only laid a wreath at her driveway mailbox, whereas the serviceman and woman being remembered travelled thousands of miles from home, often in poor conditions, without the benefit of bodyguards, armoured limo, police motorcycle cavalcade, etc.

Two years ago ,I participated in the Dawn Service at the Cenotaph , Auckland N.Z.(I am 1/2 Kiwi ) .
So I just fall in and gradually people fall in behind me until I am about the middle of a squad of 100 , we march out the the underground park, up the slope to near the Cenotaph ,where a halt is called.
After a few minutes of disorderly chatting and shuffling ,the Officer I/C comes striding along stands beside me and orders a division from “this gentleman in the hat”, ..... calls the squad behind me to order and wheels them/it around to the far side of the Cenotaph , so I am therefore in the last rank of the original parade.
Still with me ?
All good so far, sappers like being away from sharp eyes, even after 52years, and then would you believe it , the parade boss comes back , calls “AHHHH ten hunnn “ , “ A...bout Turnn”, and so now where is this shy sapper of rural background ? flamin right marker.
