View Full Version : Footwell water tank in a D3

I'm exploring better water carrying solutions than 20L jerry cans, and am currently looking at 2 tanks made by Boab.
They have a 40L unit which appears to fit almost perfectly, based on their measurements, and a 55L unit which might fit.
Does anyone have one of these on the floor behind the front seats???
I won't be carrying anyone in the back on any trips, so footwell access is not an issue.
If someone has one of these, or similar, I'd really appreciate some feedback - and I'm really not interested in the "bladder" type water bags after a less than happy experience :<(((
Thanks
Alan

How would you secure them?

I had the square 1 in my D2 when we did the Canning Stock Route years ago. secured to the cargo barrier with the second row seats removed , and fitted a hand pump to the cargo barrier just inside passenger rear door , the type you see on camper trailers .

Only real issue we had was the fitting off the bottom is not that well protected and trying to fill it up from the bore using a bucket was a adventure. Completed the trip with no problems.

I did look at the other type in your picture but decided having to draw water from both side didn't suit me .

If it fits, I'll figure that out later!

Went down to my local Autobahn store this morning and they had one in stock - surprise!
Took it out and trial fitted it, and it fits like a glove. Even when I put my Engel back between the 2 2nd row seats, it will fit.
It does have fixings on the end of the tank, and I'll secure it to a seat frame, but with the front seats back against it, and the fridge on the other side, I doubt that anything will move it!
But I'll secure it just in case.

What a great outcome!

and here it is. The fridge will just fit in the space where it normally lives.

Often wondered how the water got from one side to the other with the big arch in the way. Does it have an internal pipe to siphon it accross?

There are outlets on both sides. I'm guessing when one side empties, you go to the other side!
all I want is to go away and try it!!!!!!!!!

So many options for sending water each way, In case you had your kitchen on one side.
I actually like it that way. In theory like having reserve on a trail bike fuel tank

Does look a good fit and centralises the added weight.

Probably a bit late but we had one of those for a Simpson/Hay river trip with two kids in the back. Worked a treat, as others have said was a bit of a nuisance when the level got below the hump and I only had a hose on one end. I just lifted it up to move the water. We didn't need to secure it as it didn't move.

Tote

Not moving during general driving is one thing, however it becomes a problem in an accident, particularly a roll over.... loose objects inside the car could be the difference between the family walking away and something worse...

great advice. Not tying it down because it fits is simple error I would have made as well.

Hi Lukeis, thanks for the reply. That was the point of the post, just in case someone didn't see the hazard...

An 8mm eyebolt into the preinstalled nutserts in the end of the tank, plus an 80kg Velcro strap around the seat mount. One of these on each end, plus the front seats pushed right back against it, and it does not move an inch!
If I lift the side of the tank, I end up lifting the whole side of the disco.
I'm going to call it secured.

In a precovid life, I was going back and forth to the US every 6 or so weeks, and had some very good ties to military equipment manufacturers.
The seat back panels were a custom job to fit the Disco seats, and came from Wilde Custom Gear.
MOLLE Seat Back Panel – Wilde Custom Gear | Tactical Nylon | Built For Battle (https://wildecustomgear.com/collections/accessories/products/molle-seat-back-panel)
As you can see, I got one for each seat, and as no one ever sits in the back, I've located quite a bit of gear on the panels in various molle pouches.
