Hi there,
I'm just putting the feelers out to see if anyone has a driver's side 3.9 head in working order just laying about.
I have a couple of snapped off studs in it and I would prefer to get a clean run on the build instead of playing around with this one. If no one has one I'm forced to try and remove them myself due to no one wanting to do it at a local shop.
Other than that the engine appears to be rebuilt pretty recently.

The heads are identical. There is no "driver's side" head.

I might add that it's a 14 bolt head

That really doesn't matter. You can fit a 10 bolt head.

The only difference with even the latest heads is the size of the bolt holes to fit the aircon compressor.

If 14 bolt it will be shim gasket so if you get a later one you would have to fit a composite gasket.

Sorry if I seem to be "smart" but you can broaden your pool of possible fitments if you consider later heads.

Be aware that some earlier ( later))3.5 heads can also fit but do not have waisted inlet valves.

No I'm not taking you as a smarty-pants at all, to be truly honest this is my first v8 rover tear down, and I am learning as I go.
And to be even more open about it I have a D1 ten bolt 3.9 no less than three metres away which I was going to take out the motor to work on in due course. I was not aware that they were interchangeable.
Thanks Phillip your advice has just put me in a good mood [emoji4].

The studs should be pretty easy to remove. Try the old joining two nuts together trick. A gentle whack on the ring spanner on the inside nut should break the seal. There is no need for the studs to be super tight and unless someone has used red Loctite on them for some daft reason they should undo easily enough. And if the head is so soft that the studs strip it, then it was on it's way out anyway. If they do strip and the head is OK, then it's easy enough to insert helicoils.
I find it odd that a shop would hesitate doing this. They should simply explain the dangers and potential costs, get your approval and get the job done.

Or you can just put the right sized allen key in the top of the stud and just undo them noting the OEM fit are stretch bolts for a 3.9. If there are studs they are aftermarket - normally ARP.

The manifold studs both intake and exhaust snapped off below head surface level, head bolts where not an issue at all.
I have a later ten bolt head 3.9 that I will strip off the heads and use those.
One of the main issues that I have with work on the vehicle is that I have no shed or work bench to do what I need to do. I tried to clamp the head down to a transport case (musician case) on work horses frames but it was futile. I've been working in between rain and hail storms just looking over my shoulder so I can drop the bonnet and get inside.
It's going to make me appreciate the car more doing it the harder way [emoji23]

Yeah I was happy to pay for the job to get done at a shop but they must have been full of work. One guy said that he was booked out for a couple months.
