View Full Version : Rattling Noise Under Vibration

Hi All,

I've had an annoying metal vibration/rattle noise for quite some time in my D4. Sounds like a bash plate vibrating and only occurred under load at very low speed.

It's been transient and hard to locate.

In the last few weeks the noise has started being a constant feature, even at unloaded idle. I briefly crawled under today whilst at a mechanically minded mate's place and it appears like it might actually be an internal exhaust noise. I'm going to have a better look on the weekend, as I'll have a bit more time.

It's occurring around or in the big bulge in the exhaust system about midway along the length of the car. I'm assuming it's some sort of baffle? I'm also assuming it won't be cheap to replace.

I'm sure somebody here knows what said bulge is called and may have some experience of it failing and how much it's going to hurt my wallet?

Cheers,

Kev.

Had this on the SC..it was the guard thst fits beneath the auto trans pan..needed bending and tightening to stop it vibrating.

I found a gearbox exhaust shield in my D3 that had several mounting points fail. I think i just Zipped tied the shield in place and the rattle stopped.
I am still wondering if there was meant to be a second bigger shield over this exhaust heat shield to protect the gearbox but i haven't looked under any other D3's to see.

That sounds positive … maybe something that simple ..... ish. Fingers crossed.

Thanks.

Chased similar issue for 12 months. After much searching and rattling driving me mad a post here put me on to the brake pad retaining clips. I’d removed and tightened every bash plate in my search. I could physically rattle the pads. Sounds like a church bell. Replaced with Land Rover genuine retaining clips and problem solved. 100% How you describe the issue.
I dont have the skill to post the video I did of this but if you Pm I can send it to you.
When you go for a drive see if the rattle disappears when you apply the brakes.
Poke a screwdriver through the wheel and see if you can wriggle the pads up and down. The shouldn’t move. anyway easy check to do. Mind you I didn’t have the sound when stationary. Perhaps a clip has broken and disappeared altogether.

Hi Folks,

After poking around under the car on the weekend, now that the noise has become so prominent even in park, the issue is definitely the big fat baffle. If I isolate it's movement, there is no noise at all. Let the baffle swing free on the rubber mounts and the rattle occurs. There is a dent on the baffle casing, so I'm assuming I've hit something whilst offroad and it's compromised something inside.

Not sure whether to try and find a part myself or let some exhaust shop loose.
Ideas?

Cheers,

Kev.

Hi Kev,

IIRC Tombie had an exhaust guy cut out that muffler/silencer/resonator and replace with straight pipes. Probably lets the system flow better and apparently give a nice exhaust note. It's on my list of mods (tempted every time I drive past the local exhaust joint.)

Thanks Mate, I'll contact Tombie to see if there were any other changes required.

Nope, just cut it out. Slightly deeper note. On my wish list is a full 409 stainless mandrell bent system, everytime i look at the restricting bends after the turbo i make my mind up to get it done, then "common sense" (aka SWMBO) takes over and the budget gets "re-allocated".

Hahaha! 'Common Sense' stops me just doing the cut out and replace....If only she wouldn't notice the change in exhaust note[bighmmm]
