Just a quick question....
Am I right in thinking that the large bush that surrounds the withdrawal sleeve is also somehow acting as an oil seal?
i can’t get my head around what stops oil leaking out between that bush and the sleeve?

Thanks everyone!

Actually....that could be a stupid question, for that matter, what even stops oil coming straight through the centre of the sleeve?

I think the oil seal is deeper in the case and this is just the clutch mechanism.

Thanks Ian,

There’s no oil seal further back...the mechanism covers the main shaft bearing and layshaft bearing.
After looking at the manuals, I’ve come to the conclusion that the oil would only trickle through those bearings. Any oil that makes it onto the primary shaft is fed back in via the scroll on the shaft. I guess there would be very little oil getting to the outside of the sleeve as it’s at the top.

The thing that made me question it is that there’s an oil seal on the end of the crosshaft...that’s when I realised oil actually gets in there...but that cross shaft is at the bottom, so probably is sitting in oil, rather than just the odd splash.

Having said all that, I could be completely wrong, but that’s the theory I’ve come up with!

Oil level is well below the input shaft, and this housing has a drain to direct oil back into the main box via the front bearing of the layshaft. And there is a spiral on the actual shaft that directs the oil back.

One of the changes early on in the 80" was to lower the oil level in the gearbox to stop this. Seems to work.

Thanks John, I really appreciate having access to your knowledge!

No seal, just a scroll to throw the oil back. If you park nose down on a very steep hill (I am in the UK), oil can dribble past the scroll

and it pulls water into the box if you go a bit deep with the fording.

....and don't have the wading plug in place, although I'm not sure that the drain hole is the only place water gets in - I don't think the rubber boot on the clutch shaft is particularly effective at keeping water out if immersed.
