Gday All,

The coleman rechargeable light has finally died and looking around it seems that everything is LED and either very dull or super bright .Just wondering what others have decided on for camp lighting.

I know there are small torches and headlamps etc but I am looking more at the lantern type thing.

There are so many out there it’s trial and error I think. I’ve got some great little lights that charge from any standard USB outlet with an inbuilt cord that’s also the hanging clip but they aren’t available any more - adjustable from very dull to very bright.

Also have some similar to these - Brillar 9 Watt LED Lantern (https://www.aussiedisposals.com.au/brillar-9-watt-lantern)

Fixed brightness but the amount you open them controls the light level so quite adjustable as well.

I bought about 5 different types of these magnetic base lights, and this one has become my goto light, only exception is in tight spaces.
The ability to vary the light intensity via a rheostat is nice to have, as opposed to the click to specific dim levels(and the annoying flashing modes).

They are quite large compared to most other types, about 20cm long. And really needs something ferrous to hold it, as they don't stand upright by themselves easily.

Not quite sure how long a single charge actually lasts, but measured in the hours range(maybe 2 or 3), can also be run off the USB charge cable too.

I have a nice LED lamp that I got from Supercheap - works really well and cost about $75.

After a couple of years the battery died (even in storage they should be charged up once a month) so I started looking for another light but the equivalent were now far more expensive. A trip to the Battery Factory had me coming home with a new battery for $18.

So if you were happy with your Coleman - consider pulling it apart and getting a replacement battery from somewhere like the Battery Factory, Battery World (expensive) or Jaycar.

Oddly lights are more about the batteries than the lights. This might be a little outside the box. I have a jump start battery which can run my computer, charge my camera, phone or other bits and I think it would rock to make my own light or lights with just a plug to use via it as the power source. It has a recharge cable for a car lighter socket. Pretty sure it could be recharged via my Anderson plug connection while driving.

Just tried plugging two big strings of LED xmas lights in and it had no issues after an hour still having over 95% charge left.

Mine is a little like this one (https://www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/adventure-kings-1000a-lithium-jump-starter.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwztL2BRATEiwAvnALcsBjQ0m wnRP7KgvGCS0tA0pKWCnOHiE7MG2vuubyad1gBmt7ZMx2BRoCi FEQAvD_BwE)

Making a string of LED lights or a pole of them at any brightness or an off the shelf item like this one (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-rgb-cool-warm-white-smart-led-light-strip-5m/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=product_listing_ads&gclid=CjwKCAjwztL2BRATEiwAvnALcpR3ms5RsdZpfKC32rZm B4DN4ks5qGv5aZuL-eCYE2Ulb8_oUTKiNxoCLOEQAvD_BwE)
The colour control might be handy.

or just replace the battery pack thats in it.

likely it will be a lithium or nicad pack that will just plug into a socket on the control board. head to jaycar and grab its replacement plug it in and foam tape it to fit the hole.

Thanks for the replies, the issue with my coleman is actually the light tube , I have tried several of the so called suppliers from the net and no one has it in stock . the 1 I did find O/S I could buy 2 new lanterns for the cost . its basically an economic write off from the searching I have done

If anyone has a link for a supplier then great , but it would have been purchased in about 07 as I still had a D2 ten and remember isubg the power cord for my nanocom .

Tube is U shaped with 4 prongs in a straight line not the tube with the 2 on either side of the mounting lug. has hi/low and nightlight switch on the lantern.

Sounds like you might be up for a new lantern
Fluorescent tubes are a thing of the past (and expensive)
As someone previously mentioned, try some LED strip light
most of them these days come with dimmers and colour
changing switches that work off bluetooth
I've got some permanently stuck (and cable tied) to the
overhead poles in the camper, and a few stuck to conduit
with fly leads that i hang under the annex (or trees)
Always get the 3000k warm white to deter the bugs

I can recommend Korr lights. We have several.
LED Camping Lights | Camp Lighting | Hard Korr Australia (https://www.korrlighting.com.au/product-category/led-camp-lighting/led-camping-light-bars/)
I can also recommend lithium jump starters as battery sources. There are lots of brands. Ours is Projecta.

i use Coleman pressure lamps and fuel stoves.
Dual Fuel, Shellie or Unleaded. Reliable and the light is bright and the stove is hot 👍

Around camp and on the boat I use the LED strip lights powered from the house batteries and I control the intensity of these lights with a rheostat.
For portable light I use those rechargeable led torches that are available at Bunnings that have both a spot beam and a Fluro type light that both have 2x intensities that can last up to 4 hrs and I recharge these using a USB port, These cost about $30 a pop.
Both types of lights have so far given me at least 5 years of good service so far[thumbsupbig]

The LED strip lights are incredibly tough and will take heaps of abuse even in a marine enviroment[thumbsupbig]

At some point you have to just say no to all these toys and get something actually good...

try the BLF LT1 sofrin lantern, super compact, amazing build quality, awesome colour rendering from 2700-5000kelvins range, runs on 4x18650 li-ions and not those embarrassing low energy dense cells you see in generic camping stores. can charge direct off usb solar...although an external fast 4bay li-ion charger is best, they will even charge aa nimh eneloops etc.

it requires protected 18650s at about 26bucks for high capacity ~3300mah, because all unprotected dont have button tops.

its advertised as 600lumens, but really it's more like 400-450, that is constant until almost empty. but most generic lanterns will never give their output constant because they are toys.

combined with a compact lite camera tripod and you got yourself the be all end all light, great for in tent.
if you love halogen and hate the clinical look of led this lantern is just awesome.

now, beyond that i have a 100watt halogen lamp at just above head height running off the lifepo4 13.2volts gives a respectable 2200lumens/85watts that no led lightstrip or lantern has a hope of matching. add in a dimmer to set low later at night and it's just magic.
amazing kitchen light.

there are warm white high cri leds but all are 240v and sadly can't be dimmed. plus 240v is dangerous if you dont know what your doing.

I converted to Milwaukee M12 Fuel lithium tools with brushless motors (bit by bit) for 12v I am replacing dead tools with the red brand. It is very good gear and their batteries are excellent. I find it very cost effective to combine it with lighting gear (they have very good lights) and even as 12v power packs for whatever you want to plug in. Cheers
